Kanevskaya ( Russian Каневская ) is a Staniza in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar with 44,386 inhabitants (14 October 2010).

geography

Stanitsa is located in the north of the Kuban area , almost 130 km north of the regional capital Krasnodar on the left bank of the Chelbas River . As Stanitsa, i.e. Cossack settlement , the place is formally a rural settlement despite the population corresponding to a medium- sized town, and as such has been the largest of its kind in Russia since Ordzhonikidsewskaya in Ingushetia was converted into an urban-type settlement in 2015 (city rights 2016 as Sunscha ). Beyond the Tschelbas is directly connected to the Stanitsa Staroderewjankowskaja , with which together Kanevskaya forms a contiguous settlement area with almost 60,000 inhabitants.

The stanitsa Kanevskaya is the administrative center of the same name Rajons Kanevskaya (Kanewski).

history

Staniza was founded in 1794 as one of the first 40 Cossack settlements in the Kuban area. First 1100 former Zaporozhian Cossacks settled here and named the new Stanitsa after the city of Kaniw , in Russian Kanew, on the Dnepr .

During the Second World War , the Stanitsa Kanewskaya was occupied by the German Wehrmacht in August 1942 while advancing from the Don to the North Caucasus and was recaptured by the Red Army on February 5, 1943 .
