history
The ancient Greeks founded a colony called Bata on the site of today's city . The place became a Genoese trading post in the 12th and 13th centuries and was later conquered by the Ottoman Empire . The Ottomans built a fortress called Sudjuk Kale at the mouth of the Zemes River in order to conduct the slave trade from here. In 1808 the fortress was conquered by Russia . The city was founded in 1838 on the site of the fortress destroyed by the Russians in 1812. Its name goes back to the province of New Russia (Novorossija) . Novorossiysk was the capital of the Black Sea Governorate , which was formed in 1896 and existed until 1918/20. At the beginning of the 20th century the port was expanded and an economic boom followed.
During the Second World War , the city was the scene of fierce fighting in 1942/43. Novorossiysk was the easternmost point on the Black Sea coast to which the German Wehrmacht advanced in the 1942 summer offensive . Since this was fought off here, Novorossiysk received the award of a hero city in 1973 (the then head of state and party leader Leonid Brezhnev was deployed as a political officer south of the city).
The former Italian battleship Giulio Cesare was accepted into the Soviet Navy as Novorossiysk in 1949 in honor of the city . The cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov , which was closest to the battleship in the Novorossiysk explosion and supported the ship's crew, is now a museum ship in the city's port.
