The Kassel Marathon is a marathon that has been taking place in Kassel since 2007 and is one of the largest and fastest in Germany. It is organized by AS-Event GmbH from Ahnatal , represented by the long-time national marathon trainer Winfried Aufenanger , who also co-founded the Kassel City Run . The program also includes a half marathon and handbike half marathon , a mini marathon over 4.2195 km for children and young people, walking competitions and a marathon relay, in which four runners each complete part of the marathon route.

overview

Sensenstein Marathon (1972–1979)

The Kassel Marathon has its origins in 1972, when the Sport for Everyone group of KSV Hessen held a people 's marathon for the first time on the Sensenstein near Nieste . The run was carried out according to the conditions of the German Athletics Association (DLV), so that the performances could be included in the list of the best. The finish line ended after seven hours. 179 participants started at the first edition of the Sensenstein Marathon, including the seven-time winner of the 100 km from Biel Helmut Urbach from TV Refrath and the participant in the 1974 European Athletics Championships over 3000 m obstacle Herbert Leyens from Belgium .

In the first two years of the event, the marathon route was still laid out as a large loop, starting at the Sensenstein youth castle and finishing at the large parking lot below the youth castle, but after the third event, the runners stayed in the lower Niestetal and ran three times a 13.5 km long pendulum course through the Kaufunger Wald , plus the approach and drainage route from the Sensenstein. This new route over 30 km of gravel roads and twelve kilometers of asphalted paths had less gradients than the old circuit, but it was challenging with a total of 180 meters of altitude.

Kassel Marathon (1980–1997)

For the ninth edition in 1980, the Sport für Jedermann group of KSV Hessens chose a new route in the Kassel Fulda valley with start and finish on the Fulda valley road near the Wolfsanger school . The new level and continuously paved 7,032.5 m long pendulum course over the Fuldatalstraße was run through six times for the marathon. As part of the supporting program, the previous 28.5 km long trial route from Sensenstein was replaced by a 25 km long road run, and there were also walking competitions . During the premiere event with the finish line closing after four hours, half of the Fuldatalstraße was closed and the speed of traffic in the city was limited to 30 km / h. The car and motorcycle traffic could not be diverted from Fuldatalstraße due to a road closure in the Schocketal and had a disruptive effect on the total of 230 participating runners and walkers, 90 of them starters over the marathon distance. At the 10th Kassel Marathon of KSV Hessen in 1981, a everyone's run over 10 km replaced the 25 km road run last year, which was carried out once, the only winner of which was Elke Ötermann from TV 05 Wetter and the participants in the 1987 Cross Country World Championships and the IAAF World Cup -Marathons 1987 Reiner Gutschank from KSV Hessen Kassel remained.

In 1982 the Kassel Marathon moved again, this time to the Auestadion , where the start and finish of the event that has been held since 2007 under Winfried Aufenanger are still located today . The 10 km circular course that runners had to complete four times at that time led from the Auestadion forecourt via Damaschkestraße and -brücke, the street Fuldaaue , Waldauer Fußweg, Kaufunger Straße, Jahnstraße, Blücherstraße, Arndtstraße, swimming pool bridge , Auedamm, An der Karlsaue, Landaustraße and Menzelstraße to the Auestadion. For the required length of the marathon distance, there was a turning point on the Auedamm near the Gärtnerplatzbrücke, which was approached from the swimming pool bridge. In order to meet the requirements of the German Athletics Regulations (DLO), the walking competitions were held on a 2.5 km long commuter route. At the 11th edition of the Kassel Marathon on this new circuit, Nachtfrost had turned the route into a slide, so that all start times had to be postponed by half an hour. 130 marathon runners, 50 amateur runners and 30 walkers took part in the individual disciplines.

There were several surprises at the 19th edition in 1990. The then 21-year-old chemistry student Matthias Körner from Leipzig improved his personal best from the previous year by almost fifteen minutes and set a new course record with a time of 2:29:27 h on. In the international field of participants with runners from the GDR , the CSSR , Poland , Denmark , Belgium , France and Great Britain was also the Australian Bob Brett , former fitness trainer of Boris Becker , who on the recommendation of a friend of the German Tennis Association (DTB) in Kassel about the Marathon distance started. In the following year, 1991, Matthias Körner was able to improve the course record and personal best with 2:23:48 h and received a cash bonus of 500 marks for a winning time of under 2:25 hours. The course record was also set for women that year; Ursula Starke from VfL Wolfsburg ran a time of 2:56:18 h .

After the Kassel Marathon discharge end club KSV Hessen Kassel in July 1993 went with a debt of 2.5 million marks in bankruptcy took over the newly established Athletics Association Kassel (LAV), the running event in which the former KSV department sport for everyone rose . The LAV Kassel was to run the marathon for four years until 1997 before the event was stopped with the 26th edition. In addition to financial reasons as well as a lack of young people and tiredness in the organization, the main reason was the recurring collision of runners with road traffic between Damaschkestrasse and the Seglergaststätte in the Fuldaaue in the last years of the event , parallel events of the Kassel Exhibition Center did not allow road closures.

Kassel Marathon (from 2007)

Start of the half marathon in Damaschkestrasse (2016)
Relay change point in Mombachstrasse (2016)
Finish area in the Auestadion (2016)

The plans for the new edition of a marathon run in Kassel under Winfried Aufenanger began in 2005. The route was set to be a circuit for marathon runners to be run twice until 2009 and officially measured in 2006, with start and finish at the exhibition halls via Zehntscheune , Waldau , Lilienthalstrasse, Söhrestrasse, Queenhofstrasse, Hafenbrücke, Holländischer Platz , Halitplatz , Rothenditmold , Zentgrafenstrasse, Berliner Brücke, Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse , Friedrichsplatz and Auedamm. This largely flat route had a greater gradient, beginning at about four kilometers from Halitplatz via Mombachstrasse and Wolfhager Strasse in Rothenditmold to the Berliner Brücke with a height of fifty meters. For many runners, this incline is one of the main criticisms of the Kassel Marathon; The Kassel sports scientist Kuno Hottenrott, on the other hand, described the increase as not a problem for the average runner, the muscular adjustment would be beneficial. In order to avoid tram tracks in the pedestrian zone Obere Königsstraße and cobblestones down to the Orangery , the inliners chose an alternative route at two points: once via the Ufa Palace and once via the Altmarkt , Fulda Bridge, Untereustädter Kirchplatz, Mulberry Plantation, Blücherstraße, Arndtstraße and swimming pool bridge . Later the inline skaters drove from the Untereustädter Kirchplatz via Waldauer Fußweg, Lore-Klitsch-Weg and Arndtstraße to the swimming pool bridge.

Since 2010, the marathon runners have been running a 90-meter flat one-lap course that is based on the half marathon route, but branches off from it five times. After Crumbach and Forstfeld , a loop leads over Görlitzer Strasse, Liegnitzer Strasse, Glogauer Strasse, Waldauer Weg, Justus-Liebig-Strasse, Otto-Hahn-Strasse, Forstbachweg, Erlenfeldanger, Heinrich-Steul-Schule, Leipziger Strasse, Forstfeldstrasse and Ochshäuser Strasse, In Bettenhausen , a loop branches off at the former Salzmannfabrik and runs through the Agathof district center, Losseschule, Heiligenröder Strasse, Hagen-Park and Philips-Park. Another loop with a turning point begins behind the harbor bridge and leads over Martinstraße, Schützenstraße, Ostring, Wilhelm-Speck-Straße and Fuldatalstraße to the level of the Wolfsanger tram stop and back again, but this time directly over the Weserspitze. Similar in profile, the next loop along the Ahna through the district of North (Holland) to the Zionskirche (from 2014 Gahrenbergstraße) over the former Gottschalk site , Nordstadtpark, Fiedlerstraße and Bunsenstraße to Halitplatz . The last loop branches off at the Komödie and leads via Königstor and Wilhelmshöher Allee to Wehlheider Platz, from there via Wittrockstraße and Kohlenstraße to Georg-Stock-Platz and further following the Drusel via Tischbeinstraße, Philosophenweg and An der Karlsaue to the marble bath . In 2012 and 2014, the marathon route and half marathon route were revised and guided more directly as the start / finish was relocated from the Kassel exhibition center to the Auestadion ; the marathon route eliminated sections via Görlitzer Strasse and Glogauer Strasse in Waldau, Erlenfeldanger in Forstfeld, Wehlheider Platz and Georg-Stock- Platz in Wehlheiden as well as downtown and Auedamm, for which routes around the exhibition halls, along the Bergweg in Wolfsanger, Philippistraße and Angersbachstraße in Rothenditmold , Schönfelder Straße and Gräfestraße in Wehlheiden as well as the art college to the Auestadion were added.

At the first edition, 1152 marathon runners reached the finish. This put the Kassel Marathon in 23rd place in a Germany-wide comparison in terms of number of participants and in Hesse only behind the Frankfurt Marathon . However, the number of finishers in the marathon continued to decline over the next few years and was not stabilized until 2015. Since then, between 300 and 400 runners have completed the marathon every year. In the meantime, the Darmstadt marathon (held in 2008–2012) and the Weiltalweg landscape marathon had more finishers. Since 2012, however, the Kassel Marathon has maintained its position as the second largest Hessian marathon behind the Frankfurt Marathon. The placements taken from the annual marathon analysis of the internet journal Laufreport.de can be seen in the table on the right.

2007

For a long time everything looked close to a start-finish victory for Kenyan Samson Loywapet , who was looked after as a clear favorite by the athletics manager Volker Wagner , but ultimately fell back to fourth place (2:20:20 h) . Sun won Francis Kiprop (2:16:48 h) from Eldoret , the four kilometers from the finish of Ernest Kipyego (2:17:38 h) and Vincent Kipchirchir (2:17:50 h) , all of Kenya was able to sell, . The Hessian Athletics Association (HLV) awarded the Hessian Marathon Championships to Kassel for the first time. Just two weeks after a heart operation, Jürgen Austin-Kerl ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel , 2:35:48 hrs) won ahead of Hakim Ouahioune ( SF Blau-Gelb Marburg , 2:36:06 hrs) and Holger Aselmeyer ( LGV Marathon Gießen , 2:42:41 h) , for women Christiane Wilken (LG Stadt Hattersheim, 3:07:27 h) ahead of Simone Rößling (TSV Cappel, 3:10:32 h) and Claudia Rudolff ( MT Melsungen , 3:21 : 20 h) . The team scores were won by the men from SV Blau-Weiß Dodenhausen and the women from LG Stadt Hattersheim.

2008

Beatrice Omwanza , winner 2007/2008

The Kenyan marathon debutant Pharis Kimani (2:15:34 h) from Nairobi won the second edition of the Kassel Marathon after being five kilometers from the finish, which was unique in the Rothenbach Hall , by Mariko Kiplagat Kipchumba ( 2:16:46 h) had been able to solve. For the victory, Pharis Kimani and the again victorious Kenyan defending champion Beatrice Omwanza (2:40:24 h) received a prize of 5,000 euros, which the athlete from manager Volker Wagner wanted to use for the training of daughter Sharlon. As the fastest German, Michael Leck (Wolfhagen running team, 2:43:41 h) inherited the Hessian marathon champion Jürgen Austin-Kerl from the previous year in ninth place, who finished tenth in 2:48:07 h . The fastest German woman was Claudia Rudolff, who placed fourth ( MT Melsungen , 3:23:07 h) . Meanwhile, the number of finishers in the marathon fell by 45%. For the first time, this sparked the discussion about a future one-lap route of the marathon with the aim of only having to pass the ascent through Rothenditmold and Kirchditmold once and thus reduce the number of meters in altitude for the marathon runners.

2009

Cecilia Baena , winner of the inline half marathon 2009

Out of a three-man Kenyan top group, Josef Biwott (2:13:10 h) from Eldoret won ahead of Patrick Muriuki (2:13:43 h) and Samson Loywapet (2:17:49 h) and thus the prize money of 5,000 euros, the was exposed for a time faster than 2:14 h this year. Samson Loywapet was only able to overtake Joel Maina Mwangi , who had been in third position up to this point in the last few kilometers on the Auedamm , who should drop to seventh place (2:22:34 h) by the time the finish line was reached. For the first time as part of the Kassel Marathon, the German Police Championships (DPM) and the German University Championships (DHM) were held. The winner at the DPM was Thomas Langer ( Bayern / TSV Mindelheim, 2:33:08 h) and Rike Westermann ( North Rhine-Westphalia , 2:57:51 h) ; Both were also fastest Germans in the overall field of the marathon, Rike Westermann surprisingly third. The team evaluations went to the police officers from Bavaria and the police officers from North Rhine-Westphalia. Christian Flegel ( TU Dresden , 2:33:28 h) and Antje Krause ( Uni Marburg , 3:18:35 h) won the DHM, in the men's team competition the TU Dresden won. At the half marathon everything looked like Holger Aselmeyer (Sambah-Team Tennis-Service) would win , who was almost impossible to catch . Apparently irritated by a marshal, he did not cross the finish line, but turned onto the starting straight, as did his pursuer Thomas Thyssen ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel ) at first . The latter, who studies economics at the University of Kassel , noticed the mistake more quickly and was able to win with 1:11:53 h and two seconds ahead.

2010

Silke Optekamp , fourth place 2010, Hessen champion 2012

For the fourth edition of the Kassel Marathon, a one-lap course was introduced for marathon runners. For this purpose, a total of five loops were attached to the two-lap route or half marathon route that had previously been run; through the Lohfelden district of Crumbach and the Kassel districts of Forstfeld , Bettenhausen , Wolfsanger , North (Holland) and Wehlheiden . After last year's winner Josef Biwott and the winner of 2008 Pharis Kimani had lost touch with a top group of five on the second half of the course, the Kenyan Joel Chepkopol was able to pull away and won in 2:12:54 h with a new course record, which should not be set until 2018 . For the second time there was a title defense for women; Ecler Chelimo Loywapet from Kenya won in 2:38:52 h . The fastest German was Marco Schwab in eleventh place ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel , 2:27:34 h) . Silke Optekamp (PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel, 2:45:09 h) from Mönchengladbach as the fastest German woman just missed the podium with fourth place, but improved the 29-year-old North Hessian record of Angelika Stephan ( Berlin Marathon 1981 , 2: 47:24 h) by two minutes.

2011

For the last time the start and finish were at the Kassel Exhibition Center , which, due to too many other inquiries, could no longer guarantee a date for the Kassel Marathon in the months of May and June. In the course of the race, a Kenyan trio with Julius Muriuki , Pharis Irungu Kimani and Elisha Kipchirchir Rotich managed to break away after half of the course, who also reached the finish in this order. For his win with a time of 2:13:00 h, Muriuki received a bonus of 5,000 euros, for a winning time of less than 2:10:00 h he would have received an additional record bonus of 10,000 euros. Last year's winner Joel Chepkopol crossed the finish line in 2:29:46 h in eleventh place, just one place ahead of the fastest German Marco Schwab ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel , 2:29:59 h) from Schrecksbach . The women won the Kenyan Jacqueline Nytepi Kiplimo in 2:40:01 h , Sabine Mönch from Krauschwitz in Upper Lusatia was the fifth fastest German in 3:28:15 h . Objections from the athlete supervisors Volker Wagner and Wieland Pokorny, the eventual winner Julius Muriuki would have been supplied with water and energy bars outside the official refreshment points by his Dutch supervisor Chris Sinnige contrary to the rules during the heat race, were not accepted due to a lack of conclusive video evidence. Bernd Gillet ( University of Hamburg , 3:08:56 h) won the German University Championships (DHM) in Kassel for the second time since 2009 , and Antje Krause ( University of Marburg , 3:36:59 hrs ) won again two years earlier ) , in the men's team ranking the University of Kassel . Pascal Ramali ( TGS Walldorf ) and Katja Ulbrich ( Bayreuther TS ) won the German championships in inline speed skating over the half marathon distance, which were integrated into the Kassel Marathon for the first time .

2012

Sabine Berg , third place in the 2012 Inline Half Marathon

The Tanzanian Joseph Lwabi Daudi was the first to run into the finish now in the Auestadion after 2:14:47 h, thereby breaking the five-year winning streak of Kenyan athletes. In the women's category , the then 30-year-old Kenyan Salome Jerono Biwott from the Eldoret region won with a new course record of 2:35:23 h , who wanted to buy a small piece of land for herself and her family with the prize money. The fastest German was Elias Sansar (LG Bielefeld, 2:28:17 h) in tenth place, one position behind the Ethiopian Ybekal Daniel Berye (2:26:22 h) , who started for PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel , and fastest German fifth place Silke Optekamp (PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel, 2:46:32 h) . She also won the Hessian Championships, which was integrated into the Kassel Marathon for the second time after 2007, ahead of Sandra Holly ( LC Mengerskirchen , 3:04:26 h) and Antje Krause ( Ultra Sport Club Marburg , 3:26:06 h) . In the men's category, the Hessian title went to the American Fred Schmalz (PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel, 2:42:28 h) , a poet from Wyoming and lecturer in business English at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , before Frank Zimmer ( Skills 04 Frankfurt , 2:44:29 h) and Michael Leck (running team Wolfhagen, 2:46:20 h) , in the teams for both men and women at PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel. Stefan Rumpus ( SSF Heilbronn ) and Katja Ulbrich ( Bayreuther TS ) won the German championships in inline speed skating over the half marathon distance, which were held in Kassel for the second time in a row .

2013

Elias Sansar , 10th place 2012, 2013, 2014, 8th place 2015, 5th place 2019

When the two pacemakers Patrick Lusato ( TZA ) and James Kemboi ( KEN ) get off at kilometer 30 on Mombachstrasse, there is still a top group of nine, from which a Kenyan trio can break away at kilometer 39. In his first marathon in Europe , 25-year-old Hosea Kiplagat Tuei from the Kenyan Rift Valley wins after 2:15:21 h ahead of Felix Kipkorir Kangogo and the 2008 winner Pharis Kimani . Zerfe Worku Boku from Ethiopia was the first non-Kenyan woman to win the women in 2:38:40 h . The best German Elias Sansar (LG Lage / Detmold, 2:23:19 h) improved by five minutes compared to the previous year, but could not improve in terms of placement (10th place). The best German woman was Christl Viebahn ( LAZ Puma Rhein-Sieg , 2:45:42 h) in fourth place. In the half marathon, Silke Optekamp ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel , 1:17:59 h) was able to improve by almost a minute compared to the German Half Marathon Championships in Bergisch Gladbach a month earlier and ran over this distance at her second start Kassel to the second victory and another course record.

2014

Marcel Bräutigam , 6th place 2014, 4th place 2015, 3rd place 2019

At kilometer 35, the then 31-year-old Kenyan Kiprotich Kirui was able to break away from last year's winner Hosea Kiplagat Tuei , who should be fourth in 2:14:47 h , and won in 2:14:09 h . Shortly before the finish line in the Auestadion , Kenyan Eunice Jelagat Lelei was still in the lead for the women, but instead of entering the stadium, she accidentally turned into an emergency stop for support vehicles . Before she noticed her mistake, her compatriot Caroline Kwambai had already passed and won in 2:43:59 h before Lelei in 2:44:03 h . The fastest German was Marcel Bräutigam ( GutsMuths-Rennsteiglaufverein , 2:17:53 h) in sixth place and one place ahead of Christian König (GutsMuths-Rennsteiglaufverein, 2:18:17 h) . Both got one euro for every second they stayed under 2:35 hours. The best German woman was Christl Dörschel , geb. Viebahn ( SG Wenden , 2:46:49 h) in fourth place. Because of the steady decline in the number of runners in the marathon, the local newspaper Hessische / Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA) discussed the future of the marathon distance and the one-lap route for the first time. The eighth edition of the Kassel Marathon was one of the locations of the German documentary The Long Distance with Eunice Jelagat Lelei in one of the leading roles.

2015

Simret Restle-Apel , 2015 winner

In the Vorderer West district , Kiprotich Kirui was able to pull away after about 35 kilometers and with his victory in 2:14:13 h he defended the men's title for the first time. The best German Marcel Bräutigam from GutsMuths-Rennsteiglaufverein (4th place, 2:17:22 h) had to be calmed down from the support vehicle by organizer Winfried Aufenanger before the half-marathon mark ; his pacemaker did not go according to his ideas, and stomach cramps forced the 27-year-old into the bushes. Also at around the 35-kilometer mark, the Wiesbaden-based German Simret Restle-Apel ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel , 2:37:49 h) overtook the leader up to that point with a personal best of 2:29:35 h ( Ljubljana Marathon 2013 ) was the clear favorite, the Kenyan Edinah Kwambai (2nd place, 2:39:55 h) and did not give up the lead until the finish. Both runners tested positive in doping controls during their careers; Simret Restle-Apel during a training check in May 2012 for erythropoietin (EPO) (two-year ban), Edinah Kwambai in April 2016 after her victory at the Hanover Marathon (disallowed) for the asthma drug salbutamol (three-month ban). The HNA called after the marathon's return to the twice continuous double round and recalled their opinion, more atmospheric early days of Kassel Marathon.

2016

For the anniversary edition, the Kassel marathon was moved to autumn, which promised more participants, especially on the marathon distance. The 28-year-old Kenyan Edwin Kosgei Yator won in 2:15:46 h with just under three minutes and thus secured the prize of 5,000 euros after the Ethiopian and local hero Ybekal Daniel Berye from PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel (4. Place, 2:23:18 h) and in the northern part of the city also the remaining Kenyan trio with Hosea Kiplagat Tuei (2nd place, 2:18:41 h) and Antony Wairuri (3rd place, 2:21 : 23 h) had fallen apart. For the women, the duel between the Ethiopian Sintayehu Kibebo and the Kenyan Gladys Kiprotich , which Kibebo won in 2:42:14 hours with a six-second lead, was decided on the stadium round . The fastest German was Adrian Panse (USV Erfurt, 2:51:36 h) in tenth place (sixth place men), the fastest German woman in fifth place was Christl Dörschel , née Viebahn ( SG Wenden , 2:58:40 h) , which got lost on her fourth participation in the Kassel Marathon and covered almost 44 kilometers. During the mini marathon, a total of 39 children were stung by wasps, some several times, after they had probably shortened in front of the Karlswiese and ran into a bush with a wasp's nest. After crossing the finish line, they received medical care in the Auestadion.

2017

Maciek Miereczko , winner 2017

The eleventh edition of the Kassel Marathon unexpectedly hit the headlines nationwide after a top five group consisting of the Kenyans David Kipkorir Rutoh , Hosea Kiplagat Tuei (2013 winner), Dickson Kurui and Edwin Kosgei Yator (2016 winner) and the Ethiopian Ybekal Daniel Berye ( PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel ) after 19 kilometers on Ysenburgstrasse did not turn east into Josephstrasse as planned, but continued on Ysenburgstrasse towards Weserspitze. The quintet chased the wrongly driving time vehicle, while the police driving ahead with a car and a motorcycle turned correctly. Because the five athletes had not run such a kilometer-long section through Wolfsanger , they were disqualified and taken out of the race twenty minutes later on Wolfhager Strasse. The four Kenyans received a bonus of 1,500 euros as compensation, which would have corresponded to a finishing time between 2:15 and 2:17, Ybekal Daniel Berye a bonus agreed in advance for a time of less than 2:25. The surprising winner was the 35-year-old German Pole Maciek Miereczko (VfB Erftstadt, 2:27:39 h) , who also got lost, ran two and a half minutes in the wrong direction and covered an additional 700 meters. The women's race, on the other hand, went completely without incidents, where the Kenyan Daisy Langat won with a time of 2:39:31 h and Silke Altmann (LC Marathon Rotenburg, 3:23:18 h) came in third as the best German, as well as the half marathon with new course records of the Ethiopians Chalachew Tiruneh (1:06:43 h) and Melat Yisak Kejeta (PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel, 1:11:38 h) .

2018

Ybekal Daniel Berye , 9th place in 2012 and 2014, 5th place in 2015, 4th place in 2016, Hessenmeister half marathon 2018

As a reaction to last year's marathon, a green line was drawn for the first time on the streets of the marathon course, a 50-centimeter-long line every two meters. A highly diluted high-solid paint was used, which was applied with a machine actually designed for marking at airports. After Kenyan Zebedee Kiprono Chewepkwony (5th place, 2:25:16 h) had fallen behind at kilometer seven , a trio ran together until the ascent in Rothenditmold , before Dickson Kurui (3rd place, 2:16:36 h) from Kenya and on the Zentgrafenstraße a little later the Ethiopian Sisay Azew Tola (2nd place, 2:15:00 h) had to tear down. It won the 2016 winner Edwin Kosgei Yator with an improvement of the course record by three seconds to 2:12:52 h. The women won the Kenyan Brendah Kebeya, who lives with her German husband in Forchheim (LG Bamberg, 2:36:44 h) . The fastest Germans were Tobias Schreindl ( LG Passau , 2:24:20 h) in fourth place and 22-year-old Jessika Ehlers (SG Athletico Büdelsdorf, 2:42:41 h) came third . The Hessian Championships over this distance were integrated into the half marathon for the first time. All four titles awarded in the individual and team classification went to PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel , in the men’s category , Ybekal Daniel Berye (1:08:05 h) , Jens Nerkamp (1:08:47 h) and Philipp Stuckhardt (1: 08:47 h) for a triple success , for women Sandra Morchner (1:17:12 h) with the German record in the W45 age group and Anna Starostzik (1:18:12 h) for a double success of the police sports club ahead of Franziska Baist (SGK Bad Homburg, 1: 22.19 h) . The walker Karl Junghannß ( Erfurt LAC , 1:05:29 h) on his half marathon debut with a course record and Christian Schreiner ( LAZ Puma Rhein-Sieg , 1:06:10 h) were faster than Hessian champion Berye .

2019

As in the previous year, the Kenyan Edwin Kosgei Yator (2:12:37 h) won the Kassel marathon with a course record and thus secured an additional record premium of 5,000 euros. Kosgei had been able to shake off his last pursuer Dickson Kurui from Kenya ten kilometers from the finish, who crossed the finish line in 2:16:46 h in second place, ahead of the fastest German Marcel Bräutigam ( GutsMuths-Rennsteiglaufverein , 2:21:58 h) on the third place. In his third participation in Kassel over the marathon distance, groom got lost despite the green line in the Wesertor district on the Franzgraben street and covered an additional 600 meters, which had no effect on the placings and the 2000 euro bonus for the fastest German, but one Target time under 2:20 h prevented. There was also a title defense in the women with the Kenyan Brendah Kebeya (LG Bamberg, 2:38:21 h) , behind which the fastest German Jessika Ehlers (SG Athletico Büdelsdorf, 2:44:29 h) from Kiel is compared to Last year although it was two minutes slower to improve to second place. The later third-placed Kenyan Prisca Jemeli Kiprono (2:48:08 h) had to be torn down by Kebeya and Ehlers after just six kilometers.
