The Kennedy Prize ( English The Kennedy Center Honors ) has been given annually on the first weekend in December to several performing artists since 1977 by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC for their “extraordinary contributions to American culture with their life's work by their represented Arts " (engl. " for an extraordinary lifetime of contributions to American culture through the performing arts ") awarded. So far, no fewer than five and no more than eight individuals have been honored in each of the awards (see list of awardees below).

The honor includes several celebrations: a Saturday lunch at the Kennedy Center, an evening reception and dinner at the US State Department at the invitation of the US Secretary of State ; On Sunday afternoon there was a reception in the White House with the awarding of the medals on the ribbon by the US President , followed by the evening gala at the Opera House of the Kennedy Center, where the honorees followed the performances together with the US President from the Presidential Lodge.

The medal insignia is a ribbon in the seven colors of the rainbow , which is placed around the neck of the honored person roughly along the décolleté for women and around the lapel of men. With the colors of the rainbow, the spectrum of light , the designer of the award, the American illustrator Ivan Chermayeff , wanted to honor the broad spectrum of the artists' abilities in 1977. A total of three bronze clips are attached to the front left and right as well as at the bottom , on which the "Kennedy Center Honor" is engraved on the left, the name of the recipient on the bottom and the date of the award on the right (see pictures on the right). At the evening gala, in addition to the honorees, some winners from previous years also wear their medals.

In May 2018, the Kennedy Center revoked the award for Bill Cosby on allegations of sexual abuse against him.
