The 18th World Indoor Athletics Championships should take place between March 13 and 15, 2020 in the Chinese city of eight million Nanjing . A new hall in the Youth Olympic Sports Park was built especially for the event , the Nanjing's Cube , which was to serve as an athletics sports hall for training and competition purposes after the event. The slogan of the world championships was: "Nanjing's Cube, Where Athletes Dream" (Nanjing's Cube, where athletes dream).
Due to a COVID-19 pandemic , the event was postponed to March 19-21, 2021.
Candidate cities
Nanjing was awarded the contract on November 26, 2017 at the 212th Council meeting of the World Athletics Federation in Monaco . The city had prevailed against the Serbian capital Belgrade and the Polish Toruń .
Postponement of the world championships
On January 29, 2020, the World Athletics Federation decided to postpone the event to March 2021, as the spread of disease caused by a coronavirus in China and abroad remained at a worrying level despite immense efforts. The infections developed into the COVID-19 pandemic . In mid-March, World Athletics announced that the World Indoor Championships would take place two weeks after the European Indoor Championships from March 19 to 21, 2021.
