List of fatally injured cyclists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of fatally injured cyclists includes cyclists who died in races or training.

Cycling is risky. Especially in the early years up to the 1930s, numerous drivers and pacemakers died in track races . Spectators were also repeatedly killed in cycling races, such as the 1909 race track disaster in Berlin , where nine spectators died when a burning pacemaker flew into the stands.

The sports album of the cycling world in 1907 commented the numerous deaths, especially in the early days of the standing races , in which there were often falls due to burst tires on the pacemaker motorcycles :

“The dangerous occupation of long-term drivers has made many sacrifices, but you shouldn't take this unfortunate side effect of sport too tragically, because every sport brings with it a danger. The attraction of sport lies in overcoming danger, and just as war triggers the highest male virtues in the field of honor, so in the peaceful struggle for honor sport also triggers virtues which are most valued in men. "

- Sport-Album der Rad-Welt 1907, 6th year, Berlin 1908, p. 53

From the Second World War , fewer and fewer drivers were killed in track races. On the one hand, the races had become safer, thanks to better technology on the machines and better cycle racing tracks, and on the other hand, because standing races were becoming less popular and taking place less and less. On the other hand, the number of road cyclists who had fatal accidents and who were involved in fatal accidents with cars, especially during training, increased.

The list covers the period from the 1890s to the present day.

No racing drivers died in the Berlin racetrack disaster, but nine spectators did. (1909)
