The Malailada ( Ribeira Malailada , Rio Malai Lada , Ralailaba ) is a river in the East Timorese municipality of Lautém , which flows northwards from the interior of the island into the Wetar Strait .

The two headwaters of the Malailada ( Ribeira Malailada , Rio Malai Lada , Ralailaba ) arise in the west of the municipality . The western source river forms the border between the Sucos Luro and Fuat , the eastern one between Fuat and Cacavei . At its confluence, Fuat meets Suco Maina II . From here the Malailada forms the eastern border of the Sucos to Cacavei, Leuro and Home . The river continues to flow along the eastern border of the Sucos Baduro , which is on the opposite bank of the Sucos Home and Raça.

The Veromoco ( Verokoco ) has its source in Suco Raça and with the Cococo has a small tributary that also rises here.

When the borders between the Sucos Raça, Baduro and Maina I meet, the Veromoco flows into the Malaiada. The Malaiada then follows the border between Baduro on the west bank and the Sucos Maina I and Pairara on the east bank. Shortly before its mouth, the Malaiada near Tamaro is spanned by a bridge on the northern coastal road, one of the country's most important traffic routes. Saltwater crocodiles have also been observed here.

During the dry season , the river is one of the main sources of water for the community's population.

history

On Veromoco and Malailada, the Timorese empire of Sarau was located in Malailada .

During the riots in September 1999 all public facilities were destroyed. On September 25, 1999, members of the pro-Indonesian militia Team Alfa, led by Joni Marques, murdered nine people on the Malaiada near the northern coastal road from Lautém to Baucau . Among the victims were two nuns, three fathers and an Indonesian journalist.
