Margaret is a neighborhood in the fifth Viennese district Margareten . The place from which this district emerged was the namesake for the district.

history

In 1373 Margareten was first mentioned as Margaretner Gutshof (at today's Margaretenplatz). The Gutsweiler created around this manor in today's Margaretenplatz - Hofgasse - Schlossgasse area formed the starting point for the development of the suburb. In 1395 a chapel dedicated to St. Margaret of Antioch was built. It was financed by a foundation from Rudolf von Tirna, the owner of the Margaretner Hof. The farm subsequently changed hands several times until Nikolaus Olaho , Archbishop of Gran , bought it in 1555. Olai had the courtyard and the chapel partially rebuilt and laid out a large palace garden. He also called settlers to Margareten and founded Nikolsdorf south of his farm . In both Turkish Wars ( 1529 and 1683 ) the manor and the settlement were destroyed and rebuilt.
Around 1725 the rectangular Margaretenplatz developed in front of the palace. Around 1727, Count von Sonnau sold the suburb of Margareten to the municipality of Vienna. Subsequently, the extensive garden grounds were gradually built into a densely populated area.

The Margaretenplatz as the historical center of Margareten was embellished by the Margaretenbrunnen built in 1835–1836 . On the base of the fountain is a modeled statue of St. Margaret, who triumphed over the dragon and who gave the suburb its name. As part of the regulation of Margaretenplatz, the fountain was moved 20 meters to the southwest in 1886 and was given its current location.

To the west, the square is framed by the Margaretenhof , which was built between 1884 and 1885 instead of a brewery . The castle-like complex occupies an extremely important urban position in the district. Historically, it represents the symbolic successor building of the old now only existing in fragments Margaretner, lock (Margaretenplatz 2, 3). The large living area with the road-like landscaped courtyard is an early example of urban residential buildings that are in Vienna only by the council could unfold.

The incorporation took place in 1850 as part of the new 4th district of Wieden . In 1862 Margareten was assigned to the new 5th district of the same name, Margareten .
