Player career

College career

Mike Munchak received a scholarship from Pennsylvania State University in February 1978 . From Joe Paterno , coach of the local football team , the "Penn State Nittany Lions" , was Munchak in his first year in the special teams used. That year he moved with the team after a defeat-free season in the Sugar Bowl , where the University of Alabama team lost 14: 7. Because of this defeat, the Nittany Lions only won the runner-up in 1978. 1979 Munchak changed to the position of a guard and was able to establish himself immediately as a starter in the offensive line . Due to a knee injury, he had to sit out the entire 1980 season, but was able to play all games for his team in the subsequent round. The Nittany Lions moved into the Fiesta Bowl , which the team won 26:10 against the University of Southern California . Although Munchak would have been eligible to play for his college team for another year, he decided to pursue a professional career, but still got a business degree.

Professional career

Mike Munchak was drafted eighth in the first round in 1982 by the Houston Oilers, who played in the American Football Conference . He received a salary of $ 1 million per season from the Houston team and was able to establish himself immediately as a starter in the team's offense . Munchak was used to protect the quarterbacks Archie Manning and Gifford Nielsen and also had the task of running back Earl Campbell to block the way into the opposing end zone . The 1982 NFL season, however, was marked by a players' strike in which Munchak also participated. It was only used four times this round. In 1984 the Oilers were able to commit Warren Moon , who would henceforth lead the team's offense as quarterback. Until 1986 Munchak and the Oilers failed to move into the play-offs . 1986 did not go well for him personally either. Due to his knee problems, he was only able to play six games in the game round. The knee problems should accompany him until the end of his career.

Michael Munchak and his team from Houston were only able to qualify for the play-offs for the first time after the 1987 regular season . This succeeded Munchak and the Oilers in the following six seasons. A move into the AFC Championship Game was denied to him in the course of his professional career. He had to end his career after the 1993 season with chronic knee problems.

Immediately after his playing career, Michael Munchak was accepted into the management of the Oilers. From 1997 to 2011 he served as assistant coach the offensive line the Oilers, who after moving to Nashville in Tennessee Titans have been renamed. On February 7, 2011, Munchak was promoted to head coach after long-time head coach Jeff Fisher announced his resignation. He was released in January 2014. He is currently under contract as Vic Fangio's assistant to the Denver Broncos , where he oversees the offensive line.
