history

Valme was first mentioned in the deed of division of the County of Rüdenberg on April 7, 1315. It consisted of three free estates and, like all villages on the right of the Valme, was added to the county of Waldeck . The villages to the left of the Valme came to the County of Arnsberg .

In the 15th century Valme became desolate and its corridor passed to the Lords of Gaugreben . Around 1580, Jobst Hildebrand von Gaugreben (* around 1553 in Bruchhausen; † March 19, 1624 in Valme) received half of the Valme estate with his brothers when the estate was divided. He built Valme into a manor by buying forests and estates . In 1590 he built a small old hunting lodge, the Castrum falme . At the end of the 17th century, von Gaugreben moved their residence to Baldeborn near Remblinghausen . Around 1710, the von Gaugreben settlers began working in Valme, who were legally leaseholders. The present-day villages of Ober- and Untervalme emerged from their settlements. The leaseholders became leaseholders in 1824 and later replaced the long leases.

Administrative history

Until the end of the Electoral Cologne period in 1802, Valme belonged to the court and parish of Bödefeld. In 1802 the Electoral Cologne Sauerland fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt , the Sauerland was divided into Schultheißen districts. Valme first came to the Schultheißen district of Westernbödefeld. In 1816 the Sauerland came to Prussia. The Schultheißen district of Westernbödefeld was dissolved in 1823 and the municipalities were subordinated to the Schultheißen district of Gellinghausen. In 1834 the seat of the mayor, responsible for Valme, moved to Bödefeld.

In 1844, with the introduction of a new rural community order, the former parish of Bödefeld was divided into the communities of Freiheit Bödefeld and Bödefeld-Land . Valme came to Bödefeld – Land. During the municipal reorganization in 1975, Valme joined the municipality of Bestwig on its own initiative .

religion

According to the construction plans of the architect Tegethoff, a chapel was built in Obervalme in 1899/1900. The shell cost 2,202.46 marks, the interior furnishings 1,202.75 marks. The altar structure in Valme dates from around 1900, when the Gothic was to be revived. The Marienbell, cast in 1899, with the inscription “St. Mary, Mother of God, Help of Christians please for us ”weighed 62 kg. Like all bells in the parish of Bödefeld, it was forcibly collected and melted down in 1942. In 1947 the chapel received a new bell weighing 65 kg. The inscription reads: “Pray God for us, Mary”. The chapel was dedicated to St. Mary, Help of Christians . The chapel was last extensively renovated in 1999. The cross and weathercock were also renewed. Today Valme is part of the Meschede Bestwig Pastoral Association. The chapel was placed under monument protection.
