Orsbach is the westernmost part of Aachen in the Laurensberg district . It is located on a hill 200 meters above sea level, directly on the German-Dutch border and has around 600 inhabitants.

location

Orsbach has a village character and despite its proximity to the center of Aachen is rural. It is 7 km or a 10-minute drive to the city center of Aachen. The place and its hilly surroundings are used as a recreational area. Although it is only a few hundred meters from Orsbach to Lemiers in the Netherlands, this place can only be reached by car via the Dutch towns of Bocholtz or Vaals , as the footbridges and bridges over the Senserbach are not suitable for motorized traffic.

One of the largest mink farms in Germany was located near Orsbach . About 30,000 mink were kept here. Operations ceased in December 2011.

history

View of Orsbach Castle

Below the Schneeberg ridge, the medieval east-west route connection of the empire from Aachen to Maastricht once ran through the Orsbach area . Orsbach's affiliation to the Aachen Empire has been attested since 1338 and during this time the westernmost line of the Aachen Landgraben ran here . The center of the village was an old fortification with a watchtower from the 15th century, Orsbach Castle , which is now a listed building and is used as living space.

During the French occupation of the Aachen region from 1794 to 1814, Orsbach was assigned to Mairie Laurensberg, and Orsbach has been part of the Laurensberg community since 1816. After the end of the Second World War , the US Army was initially stationed in the village , and from 1946 Orsbach belonged to the British zone of occupation . Until 1949 it was unclear whether Orsbach and the German part of Lemiers would have to be ceded to the Netherlands. Corresponding territorial claims were ultimately rejected. When Laurensberg was incorporated into the city of Aachen in 1972, Orsbach also became a district of Aachen.
