Vaalserquartier is a place belonging to the Laurensberg district of Aachen and is located directly on the border with Vaals in the Netherlands . Vaalserquartier can be reached via the B 1 or via the Maastrichterlaan N 278 (NL).

history

The name Vaalserquartier goes back to the early 14th century and it still contains the old structure of the former Aachen Empire , according to which this area was one of the seven so-called quarters at the gates of Aachen's city wall . Visible signs from that time are the still existing, but fundamentally rebuilt, watchtower Gut Beeck on Dreiländerweg, which belongs to the Aachen Empire, and the Adlerstein at the former border crossing at Kleine Wache . There are also remnants of both the inner and the outer Aachen moat to the southwest of Vaalserquartier .

Until the completion of today's Maastricht Laan in 1825, the transit traffic had tortured over an old Roman route that coming branched off from Aachen in Vaalserquartier of today's Vaalserstraße and as old Vaalserstraße pervaded by Vaalserquartier and the former border Small guard happened here moved to Akerstraat in the Netherlands and continued until Maastricht .

Old St. Paulus-Kerk in Vaals as the responsible parish church for Vaalserquartier

Until 1804 the old St. Paulus-Kerk in neighboring Vaals was responsible for the localities Vaals and Vaalserquartier as a branch church of St. Jakob in Aachen, then until 1951 St. Jakob itself. The house at Alte Vaalser Strasse 88 in Vaalserquartier served from the early years in the 13th century to around 1673 as a Catholic pastor of the Pauluskirche. At first it was only inhabited by the Vaals chaplain and later converted into a Catholic primary school. In the meantime, during the closing phases of the St. Paulus-Kerk, the rooms were occasionally used as an alternative for church services and baptisms. The old elementary school existed until around 1820 and until 1907 there were still a few vicars and sextons of the St. Paulus-Kerk living here. Then the house went into private ownership.

On January 1, 1972 Vaalserquartier, which until then belonged to the Laurensberg community, was incorporated into the city of Aachen together with the community.

Infrastructure

German-Dutch border in Vaalserquartier (2010)

Bundesstrasse 1 runs through Vaalserquartier and leads to the Dutch town of Vaals in the west of the district via the Vaalserquartier border crossing.

The development and settlement of today's Püngelerstraße, named after the family, in Vaalserquartier was made possible primarily by Rudolf Püngeler . The landlord Püngeler family was closely linked to the history of some of the large farms in Vaalserquartier, Laurensberg-Orsbach and in the Soers.

The location close to the border, the close proximity to the Aachen University Hospital and the high recreational value of the surrounding area characterize the intercultural and infrastructural residential value of this quarter.

Nearby, the Senserbach rises below the border triangle Germany-Belgium-Netherlands on the Vaalserberg and flows through Vaalserquartier.

Social identity

St. Conrad

Social life in the Vaalser quarter is, in relation to its size and number of inhabitants, highly active and self-sufficient. It has a community elementary school, which in 2003 won third prize in a nationwide noise protection project for a building glass company. The primary school is located in the immediate vicinity of the St. Konrad Church and was converted into an open all-day school in the 2006/07 school year. There are also ten kindergartens and day-care centers.

With the new St. Konrad Church, built between 1948 and 1951, Vaalserquartier now has its own Catholic parish. The bronze candlestick (1982) was made by the Aachen artist Peter Hodiamont (1925–2004), who also designed the window wreath for the Schneeberg Chapel at the foot of the Schneeberg , which belongs to Vaalserquartier . The pathfinders from the Grenzlandfalken tribe (DPSG) can be found in the rectory of St. Konrad. Ambitious youth work with a cross-section of creative, sporting and spiritual activities has been taking place here for 30 years.

The local carnival association KG Vaalserquartier was founded in 1952. There is a library and various working groups for youth and social work.
