Schleckheim is a village belonging to the Kornelimünster / Walheim district of Aachen . The place is about 10 km southeast of Aachen city center on the edge of the Eifel and is in the immediate vicinity of Nütheim .

history

The entire local area belonged to a gift from Ludwig the Pious to Benedict von Aniane . According to his wishes, a monastery was to be built here. The imperial abbey Kornelimünster ruled the area of today's Schleckheim for more than 1000 years . In abteilicher time it belonged to the parish of St. Stephan, the mountain church of Kornelimünster in accordance with the judicial district of the imperial abbey .

Schleckheim originated from a Hornhof located in Slecheim. The name Slecheim changed several times. While he still bears this name in a document from 1382, the name Slechem is used as early as 1392 . The Schleckem variant appeared in the 17th century and it wasn't until 1751 that the place was called Schleckheim .

The Hornhof, considered to be the nucleus of the place, was privately owned and leased on a permanent basis, as the local money nobility regarded it as a maneuvering mass. In the 17th to 20th centuries, additional courtyards, mostly Winkelhöfe, settled around the buildings. These were built from local quarry stone .

On November 16, 1824, a school was built in Schleckheim, about which a school chronicle in the Aachen city archive reports in detail. In 1859 159 children were taught in this school, 88 of them came from Oberforstbach. In 1928, three teachers taught a total of 68 children in the two-class Schleckheim primary school.

In the 1920s, the Schleckheim church choir founded in 1925, along with the other twelve music associations in the mayor's office, testified to the lively musical life in this region. The 42 Schleckheim buildings listed in the address book of the Aachen district from 1927, in addition to the choirs, provide a further insight. In addition to the widows, the employed male residents living there are mentioned, along with the occupation. In addition to workers and other professions, farmers are mentioned above all.

Until the local reorganization, Schleckheim belonged to the Walheim community . On January 1, 1972, all places in the Walheim community were incorporated into the city of Aachen and have been part of the Aachen district of Kornelimünster / Walheim ever since .

Culture and sights

Trinity Chapel Schleckheim

Chapel The center of the village and its neighboring village Nütheim is the small Trinity Chapel , which was built in 1646 at the highest point. It replaced an even older church that was demolished and rebuilt by the residents of Schleckheim and Nütheim.

In the years 1933/1934 the chapel, built in quarry stone, was extended to a cross-shaped building with a transept. The altarpiece made in Brussels from around 1470/80 is of cultural and historical importance and was located in the St. Gangolphi Chapel of the then dissolved Kornelimünster imperial abbey until secularization .

Even in the present the chapel represents the center of the place.

A kindergarten and a school were built next to it. After the school closed, a second kindergarten was built in the vacant building. The neighboring village square is used for many social events.

Road crosses Schleckheim

Schleckheim owns two historically significant crossroads . Both are located on the connecting road to Kornelimünster . They were made from bluestone, which is very common in the region .

The upper area of the first cross shows a body of Christ. This is surrounded on the right and left in the horizontal bar by the Mother of God and the Apostle John . A skull has been carved into the capital . The inscription on the cross is weathered and only the words "Memento Mori" (Remember death) can be read. The origin of the cross is unclear.

Schleckheim's second crossroads was also made of bluestone. It has a metal body and a wide base. In addition to the Roman number  V, the year 1883 and the letters J. H. S. , which means Jesus-Savior-Blessed Maker, were carved into the stone. The origin of the cross is also unclear. However, it was probably built on the occasion of a popular mission.

economy

The Schumag machine factory settled in the Schleckheim industrial area as early as the 1960s, creating numerous jobs for the residents.

Agriculture, which was decisive for the establishment of the place, has meanwhile almost completely disappeared from Schleckheim.
