The formerly independent municipality of Walheim north of the Eifel has been part of the city of Aachen since the municipal reorganization in 1972 . Since then, Walheim has been the largest town in the Kornelimünster / Walheim district . With numerous shops it is a small sub-center in the south of Aachen.
history
In 1971 Walheim, together with Breinig , Mulartshütte , Roetgen , Venwegen and Kornelimünster , pleaded for the formation of a municipality in Münsterland. But the Kornelimünster area was divided as follows on January 1, 1972 for reasons of settlement geography: Kornelimünster / Walheim becomes a district of Aachen , Breinig and Venwegen go to Stolberg .
The municipality of Roetgen is formed from Mulartshütte, Rott and Roetgen - with 8000 inhabitants it is by far the smallest municipality in the Aachen district (since 2009 the Aachen city region ).
Town twinning
A partnership with Montebourg ( Normandy / F ) has existed since 1960 , which, after incorporation in 1972, is maintained by the Aachen district of Kornelimünster / Walheim . This makes it the oldest city partnership in Aachen . The town twinning is maintained on the French side by the Association d´Échanges Culturels et Sportifs Comité de Jumelage MONTEBOURG-WALHEIM and on the German side by the Jumelage Committee Aachen-Walheim-Montebourg eV.
Montebourg was fiercely contested between the Americans and the Germans during World War II . The city is in the immediate vicinity of the invasion beach Utah Beach , where the invasion took place on June 6, 1944 .
Generations of young people from Walheim and Montebourg have taken part in the youth exchange programs offered since 1960 and thus got to know the culture and people of the partner community.
