The Ottoburg is an early Baroque castle in the town of Schlitz in the Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse and is one of the five Schlitz castles , Vorderburg , Hinterburg with rear tower, Ottoburg and Schachtenburg , which were integrated into the city wall and formed the medieval city ​​fortifications, as well as the Hallenburg Castle just outside .

The Ottoburg was founded in two construction phases on the medieval city ​​fortifications , whereby the smaller of the two corner towers in the northeast comes from earlier times. In the cellar there are remains of the old city ​​wall with a memorial plaque, which refers to the year of construction 1653 and the builder Otto Hartmann von Schlitz as a member of the " Fruit Bringing Society ". The battlements of the castle were demolished, part of the moat was buried, and houses adjoining the city wall were demolished. In 1681 the Ottoburg was given its present form by Philipp Friedrich von Schlitz and his wife, Juliane Elisabetha von Minnigerode, whose double coat of arms is located above the baroque portal of the main entrance.

Todays use

After the Second World War , Ottoburg was home to several displaced families, served as a youth hostel from 1955 to 1990, is now privately owned and houses the Count's archives and a house museum.
