Presley Ewing

Presley Underwood Ewing (born September 1, 1822 in Russellville , Logan County , Kentucky , †  September 27, 1854 in Mammoth Cave , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1854 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Presley Ewing attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1840 the Center College in Danville . After studying law at Transylvania University in Lexington and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Russellville. Ewing studied in the years 1845 and 1846 also still at Baptist Seminary in Newton ( Massachusetts ) theology.

Politically, Ewing became a member of the Whig Party . He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1848 and 1849 . In the congressional election of 1850 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Kentucky , where he succeeded Finis McLean on March 4, 1851 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on September 27, 1854 . This time was overshadowed by the heated discussions about slavery in the run-up to the civil war. Ewing died of cholera in September 1854 . He was buried in Russellville. His parliamentary mandate fell to Francis Bristow after a by-election .
