Beginning of Psalm 102 (101) in the Ramsey Psalter

The 102nd Psalm ( Septuagint and Vulgate 101) is a psalm from the fourth book of the Psalter. He is included in the group of so-called penitential psalms .

classification

The first verse describes the psalm as a kind of prayer form with which a "wretched" person can bring his need to God:

"A prayer for the poor when he is despondent and pours out his complaint before the Lord."

- Psalm 102,1  LUT

Although the subject of guilt is not addressed in Psalm 102, it is counted as the fifth penitential psalm in the church penitential psalms .

content

The prayer first asks the Lord to hear his prayer (verses 2–3). Then he first describes his illness and the loneliness that goes with it (verses 4-8) as well as the scorn of his enemies (verse 9). The ephemeral man (verses 10-12) is finally contrasted with the eternal God (verse 13). It expresses the certainty that God will take care of Jerusalem ( Zion ), which 587 BC. Chr. Was destroyed by the Babylonians and that also meet the Gentile nations to serve the Lord (verse 14-23). At the end the prayer returns from the vision of the rebuilding of Jerusalem to his own situation. God ends his life prematurely. Still, he once again lifts his gaze to God and expresses his confidence that the descendants of the present pious will see God's intervention and the restoration of Jerusalem (vv. 24-29).

reception

Verses 25b – 28 (together with Psalm 90 ) were used by Jochen Klepper for his New Year's song “ Who you have time in your hands ” (1938), EG 64.
