Career

Career as an amateur boxer

Roger Michelot started boxing as a teenager. During his time as a successful amateur boxer , he lived in Paris and belonged to a boxing club there. He was a multiple French champion of amateur boxers in middle and light heavyweight. At the age of 20, he qualified in 1932 to participate in the boxing tournament at that year's Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He started there in the middleweight division . He won there over Louis Lavoie, Canada and Hans Bernlöhr, Germany, on points. In the semifinals he lost to Amado Azar from Argentina on points. In the fight for the Olympic bronze medal, which was still being boxed out at that time, he was also defeated on points against Ernest Pierce from South Africa and thus finished 4th.

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Roger Michelot started in the light heavyweight division. He came there to a non-fighting victory over Enrique Quiroz, Peru and to points wins over Börge Holm, Denmark, Sydney Leibbrandt, South Africa and in the final over Richard Vogt , Germany, and thus won the Olympic gold medal . As the best European boxer in his weight class, he was also awarded the title of European Champion .

The French Boxing Association did not take part in the European Amateur Boxing Championships in Budapest in 1934, in Milan in 1937 and in Dublin in 1939. Roger Michelot could therefore not start there. Even in the continental comparative battles between America (USA) and Europe, which were common at the time, he was never at the start.

He boxed several times in Germany in the 1930s. The following starts are known:

  • In 1933 he boxed in Goch as part of an unofficial international match between Germany and France in the middleweight division against Blum from Altena. The result of this fight is unknown
  • on November 3, 1936 he fought in an official international match between Germany and France in Cologne and won the light heavyweight division over Hans Bernlöhr, Stuttgart, on points,
  • In October 1937 he fought in Berlin in the light heavyweight division against the German amateur champion from 1935 and 1937 Willy Pietsch from Leipzig in a draw

Career as a professional boxer

In 1942 and 1943, Roger Michelot played 14 fights as a professional boxer, of which he won 11, lost 2 and drew one. With one exception, he always fought in Paris and always in the middleweight division. None of these fights was about a championship title. Seen in this way, his professional career was rather insignificant compared to his amateur career.
