Championship decision
As in every season, the favorites to win the championship were the three big teams from the Bosporus : Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul . The only question was which team is where at the end of the season? For Fenerbahçe this season was very important, it is their 100th anniversary, so they wanted to bring the title to Kadıköy . Beşiktaş and Galatasaray both wanted to prevent Fenerbahçe from doing this. Beşiktaş had won the championship in its 100th year in 2003 and therefore wanted to remain the only team that has made it. Galatasaray turned 100 in 2005. They did not manage to win the championship title at the time and were “only” Turkish cup winners in the season, so the Red and Yellow wanted revenge. Clubs also had personnel changes. Fenerbahçe replaced the German Christoph Daum, who retired at the end of the season, with the former world-class player Zico as head coach. Mateja Kežman from Atlético Madrid and Tümer Metin from rival Beşiktaş were the new signings for the team. Beşiktaş brought Mert Nobre from Fenerbahçe Ricardinho and Matías Delgado because many are a name. Galatasaray made hardly any significant transfers. Only the change from Okan Buruk , who previously played for Galatasaray, was a surprise.
The three teams placed in the first three places. Fenerbahçe was in 1st place for most of the season. Beşiktaş and Galatasaray first played for 1st place. But then Galatasaray fell out of the race and later also Besiktas, which is why these two now played for 2nd place. All teams lost many points on relegation candidates or teams that were placed in the middle of the table. On matchday 32, the championship decision was made early on, Fenerbahçe only needed a draw against Trabzonspor (Beşiktaş lost 3-0 to Bursaspor and Galatasaray only 1-1 against Sivasspor). So the goal of Fenerbahçe was achieved in the 100th year of Turkish championship.
Relegation battle
Sakaryaspor was on matchday 30 as the first relegated. Kayseri Erciyesspor and Antalyaspor were the last two teams that could not reach the safe shore on matchday 34.
