S. Radhakrishnan ( Telugu సర్వేపల్లి రాధాకృష్ణన్ , Sarvēpalli Rādhākr̥ṣṇan* 5. September 1888 in Thiruttani ; † 17th April 1975 in Madras , Tamil Nadu ) was 1962-1967 President of the Republic of India and is considered an important religious philosopher . He was a pioneer of Neo-Induism .

Life

Radhakrishnan was born the son of Sarvepalli Veeraswami and his wife Sarvepalli Sita (Sitamma). He grew up in a devout Telugu- speaking Hindu environment. He spent his early years in Thiruttani and Tirupati . His father was a low service tax clerk at a local zamindar, which is a local landlord. First he completed his primary education at the KV High School in Thiruttani. In 1896 he switched to the Evangelical Lutheran Mission School Hermansburg in Tirupati and then to the state secondary school in Walajapet . He was also named “Dr. Krishnan "called.

After twelve years of education in Christian mission schools, he studied philosophy and graduated in 1918 from Madras Christian College with a doctoral thesis The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions . From 1918 to 1921 he was professor of philosophy at the University of Mysore , and then in 1921 to move to the University of Calcutta for ten years until 1931 . He served as Vice Chancellor at the University of Andhra from 1931 to 1936 . This was followed by a stay and teaching activity in the United Kingdom . From 1936 to 1952, he was Professor of Eastern Religions and Ethics at Oxford University . At the same time, his teaching activities at the University of Calcutta took him regularly to his home country, where he was professor of philosophy from 1937 to 1941. From 1939 to 1948 he took over the duties as Vice Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University and from 1953 to 1962 the office of Chancellor at the University of Delhi . In 1949 he was appointed Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union, where he worked until 1952. As a further political office, he was Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962 . President of India from 1962 to 1967, he was elected as a non-party candidate by indirect election with a majority of 98% of the vote on May 7, 1962

Among other things, he received the German order Pour le mérite for science and the arts in 1954, the Goethe plaque of the city of Frankfurt am Main in 1959 and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1961 .
