geography

Schönwies from the west

Schönwies is located in the Upper Inn Valley , between Landeck and Imst , on the eastern border of the district. Separated from the Landeck basin by the protruding rock bar of Kronburg Castle , the place is geographically more likely to be assigned to the valley area west of Imst. Settlement extends mainly in the narrow valley floor south of the Inn , but there are also isolated settlements and alpine areas on the slope and the Starkenbach district north of the Inn.

The highest point in the municipality is the 2827  m high Große Schlenkerspitze in the Lechtal Alps, north of Schönwies.

Community structure

The community consists of the districts Starkenbach, Bichlifelder, Siedlung, Oberhäuser, Dorf, Öde, Saurs, Ried, Grieshaus, Höfle, Lasalt, Obsaurs, Föhrenwaldsiedlung.

Neighboring communities

The neighboring communities are southwest Zams , north Imst , east Mils bei Imst , Imsterberg and Wenns .

history

The area around Schönwies was probably inhabited continuously since the end of the Early Bronze Age. The Breonen lived in a settlement on the Burschl moraine hill . There was a typical alpine burnt offering place where consecrated objects of the Latène culture were found.

The place name Schönwies refers to the location of the parish church and has been used since the 18th century. Previously, the place was called Saurs, which probably comes from Illyrian and means "damp".

The establishment of the Arlbergbahn in the 1880s brought new job opportunities for the population. Schönwies got the nickname "Railway Village".

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Schönwies is a talking coat of arms and is composed as follows: "Divided by gold and red (= beautiful) obliquely to the left, at the dividing line one above and two clover leaves (= meadow) in confusing colors below ".
