About this picture

Schwentinental is the second largest city in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein and extends about 10 km along the lower reaches of the Schwentine between Holstein Switzerland and the mouth of the Schwentine in Kiel . The city was only created in 2008 from the merger of the municipalities Raisdorf and Klausdorf , which are free of charge and which today characterize the cityscape as districts. In addition to the large local recreation areas such as the Schwentine Park, the nature reserves along the Schwentine oxbow lake , the city is also known nationwide for one of the largest specialist retail centers in Germany.

Geography and transport links

Schwentinental is located east of Kiel on the Schwentine , which borders the city to the north. In the east lies the lake landscape of Holstein Switzerland with the neighboring town of Preetz. The federal highways 76 and 202 connect the city to Lübeck, Kiel and in the direction of Fehmarn, and the Raisdorf station is on the Kiel – Lübeck railway line with a connection to the RE and RB lines Kiel – Lübeck. Schwentinental is part of the bus network of the Kiel transport company. The European long-distance hiking trail E1 leads through the city along the Schwentine.

History and foundation of the city

The history of the villages of Klausdorf and Raisdorf goes back around 1000 years (see Klausdorf and Raisdorf ). Both villages were first mentioned in a document on December 9th, 1224, when the Lübeck bishop awarded the Preetz monastery the tithe of several villages. Raisdorf was then still called Radwersdorp , Klausdorf Vruwenhuthe .

On November 19, 1369, Hinrik Blok sold Raisdorf ("dat gansse Dorp to Wendeschen rat Werstorpe") to the Preetz monastery . On January 1, 1965, Raisdorf became an office-free municipality.

Vruwenhuthe was in 1233 after the local chapel, which was dedicated to St. Nicholas in Niclaustorp renamed.

Due to the attractive, green outskirts of Kiel, both villages were able to increase their population significantly in the last decades of the 20th century to approx. 6,000 (Klausdorf) and 7,600 (Raisdorf) and managed themselves as so-called unofficial municipalities. At the beginning of the 2000s complained the state audit office Schleswig-Holstein altogether too many and small administrative units in the state. The state then started an administrative structural reform in the area belonging to the district, in which administrative units of more than 8,000 inhabitants were to be created in order to employ a full-time mayor or to be able to perform other administrative tasks themselves. Both Raisdorf and Klausdorf were therefore too small, so that the merger offered itself.

Thanks to the Schwentine as a connection and formative element for both districts and the actual character of a river valley, a namesake for the new city was quickly found. However, the name Schwentinetal was already in use for the mouth of the Schwentine, in which commercial excursion boats are on the way and advertise with this name. In order not to have to do without the appropriate name, but still be distinguishable from the ship operations at the mouth, the name Schwentinental was finally chosen.

The city was officially founded on March 1, 2008. Prime Minister Peter Harry Carstensen and Interior Minister Lothar Hay presented not only the town charter but also a welcome check for € 100,000 for the 64th city of Schleswig-Holstein. With almost 14,000 inhabitants, Schwentinental was significantly larger than the district town of Plön . Since March 2008 the city of Schwentinental has also been responsible for the administration of the Selent / Schlesen district .

At the moment, several new development areas are and are being developed, including a. on Oppendorfer Weg, Im Jürn / Kronsbruch and Wilhelm-Giesecke-Straße.

Tourism, nature and local recreation

Bernhard Howaldt had the first hydropower plants built on the lower reaches of the Schwentine in 1908 and dammed the Schwentine into the Rosensee . The Rosensee is now a popular starting point for boat or paddle tours upstream towards Preetz and Holstein Switzerland. Between Rosensee and Oppendorfer Mühle the Schwentine is natural and paddlers in the direction of Kiel have to move their boats here . The river valley in between was declared a nature reserve in 1984 under the name Altarm der Schwentine due to the unique nature on the steep slopes . The European long-distance hiking trail E1 runs through this area along the Schwentine and joins the Schusteracht at Rosensee . Fish swimming upstream can bypass the hydropower plants via the Helix tower fish pass (fish ladder). In the area of the oxbow lake there is a nature trail and bat safaris are offered, during which the noises of the bats are made audible with special detectors and the animals can be observed at dusk.

Right next to it is the 40 hectare Schwentinepark , a free game park with 400 different animals, most of which can be fed and petted. There is also a large adventure playground at the wildlife park and the only heated outdoor swimming pool in the greater Kiel area directly adjacent.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Divided by a drawbar that is curved at the top. Above in blue two silver wavy threads, on the right in red a silver crook with a broken shaft, on the left in gold a green oak branch. “The red ( heraldic right ) side stands for the district of Klausdorf, the other side for Raisdorf. The blue field symbolizes the Schwentine.

Town twinning

economy

Around 1000 commercial enterprises are registered in Schwentinental (as of March 2015), some of which are divided between the city and special industrial areas. The Ostseepark has been known nationwide since the 1970s due to the many different specialist stores (e.g. electronics, furniture, clothing, shoes, hardware stores, groceries, drugstores, furnishings, camping, mattresses, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, cell phones, etc.) . First the Divi department store (now Real ) settled here and the industrial park quickly developed into one of the largest specialist retail centers in Germany over the years. Since there was no comparable offer in the greater Kiel area for a long time, as well as the excellent transport links and free parking spaces, the industrial park also became popular with many customers from the Kiel area. For a long time and again there has been a dispute about whether the shopping center "on the green field" is drawing purchasing power from the inner-city area (especially Kiel) and thereby endangering inner-city areas and whether this has to be regulated by state planning. In 2006, Kiel finally opened a similar business park in Russee. Nevertheless, there are still objections from the state capital when it comes to planned changes or construction work in the Ostseepark.

Education and child care

With the primary school at Schwentinepark (open all-day school) and the Astrid-Lindgren-Schule, Schwentinental offers two primary schools, as well as the Albert-Schweitzer-Schule (formerly Raisdorf secondary school). The introduction of a separate upper school level is discussed. The German Red Cross operates a school and therapy center for the severely physically handicapped and the North German Epilepsy Center in the Raisdorf district. Schwentinental is also the location for the private Bernd Blindow schools , where vocational training and further education, the technical college entrance qualification and the Abitur are possible, as well as the Diploma University , which is also part of the Blindow group . This offers face-to-face events as a complementary component of distance learning courses . Since the Hessian Higher Education Act applies to the Diploma University, under certain admission requirements it is also possible to study without a high school diploma or advanced technical college entrance qualification. Schwentinental also operates two adult education centers.

The city has 6 KiTas with 500 places for children under 6. With the opening of several new groups since the introduction of the legal right to a childcare place in 2013, the need is expected to be fully covered for the first time in 2015.
