The pool

The 11th Swimming World Championships took place from July 16 to 31, 2005 in Montreal and were organized by the world association FINA . With over 2000 athletes, the competition was the largest sporting event in the Canadian metropolis since the 1976 Olympic Games and also the first swimming world championships in North America . The venue was Île Sainte-Hélène , where an existing outdoor pool was supplemented by additional, temporarily constructed pools for water polo and synchronized swimming competitions. The long-distance swimming competitions took place on a regatta course on a neighboring island.

At the beginning of the year, the event was temporarily in jeopardy because the organizers' budget had a shortfall of around 13 million euros. Montréal was canceled on January 19, 2005 at a meeting in Frankfurt am Main by the world association FINA. A short time later, the head of the organizing committee, Yvon DesRochers, committed suicide . In the meantime, Athens , Moscow and Berlin had signaled their interest in taking over the event, but ultimately the problems could be resolved in time so that the championship fights could take place according to plan. At a meeting on February 10, 2005 in Frankfurt am Main, Montréal was confirmed as the venue.

Competitions

For the swimmers , 23 decisions were on the program, each for men and women. This included three relay races and three long-distance races, which were held in the open sea. The actual swimming pool was also in the open air (as at the 2004 Olympics ).

In the art and high diver category , the athletes competed for medals in three individual and two synchronous disciplines.

There were also competitions in water polo and synchronized swimming at this World Cup .
