history

The city probably originated in the 14th century and was first mentioned in 1492 under the name 'Usolje' or 'Usolsk' (Russian: "у соли" , German: "at the salt"), because of its location on the nearby salt lakes.

The Stroganov family of merchants in particular had a major influence on the development of the city. On the one hand, the Stroganows founded the first salt pans at the beginning of the 16th century , which existed until the beginning of the 18th century. On the other hand, they influenced other areas of the city and built churches and the first workshops for handicrafts. The city grew steadily through the salt production and trade. From the 16th to 17th centuries, Solvychegodsk was an important handicraft and cultural center of northern Russia. The city was particularly known for its painted enamel.

In 1708 it received city rights (renewed in 1796). After 1796 Solvychegodsk became part of the Vologda governorate and the capital of a Ujesd . In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Solvychegodsk was also a place of political exile , for example from 1908–1910 for Josef Stalin .

Solvychegodsk has been a health resort since 1923. In 1937 it became part of Arkhangelsk Oblast.
