Competition classes

Four competition classes (degrees) are distinguished in equestrian sports for the disabled:

  • Grade I: Riders whose limbs are only functional to a limited extent or who have limited ability to balance. In addition, riders with poor trunk balance. Grade I is divided into:
    • Grade Ia: Severely disabled riders, mostly only step exercises.
    • Grade Ib: Step-trot tasks are required here.
  • Grade II, for riders with severe mobility impairments (leg functions and / or trunk balance), but partially good arm functions. Step and trot tasks, in the freestyle optional individual canter lessons.
  • Grade III, for riders with disabilities of two limbs, blind riders and riders with a high leg amputation on one side. All gaits of the horse are required, comparable to tasks of classes A to L in regular sport.
  • Grade IV, for riders with visual impairments or limitations in one or two limbs. The tasks correspond to those of classes L to M in regular sport.

Competitions and schedule

Between 11 and 16 September 2016, found competitions of Para-Dressage instead, the decisions were made in the second half of the day of September 13. Was the venue already for the equestrian competitions of the 2007 Pan American Games and 2016 Summer Olympics used Reitstadion Deodoro (Olympic Equestrian Center) .

At the Paralympic equestrian competitions, exclusively dressage competitions, 76 riders started with their horses. The starting field for para-dressage comprised 29 nations, 14 of which had a team of at least three riders. As usual in equestrian sports, men and women compete together in a competition.

With eleven decisions, the program was identical to that of the 2012 Summer Paralympics .

Decisions and results

Team ranking

The teams consisted of up to four riders per nation, with the three best results being included in the evaluation. The team evaluation included the team test and the championship test of all competition classes.

The team from Great Britain won by a clear 20 percentage points. The German team achieved the silver medal even though three of the four riders were taking part in the Paralympic Games for the first time.

Individual ratings: Freestyle

In the freestyle, the second sets of medals were awarded per competition class. In these tests, the riders put together the prescribed lessons of their competition class individually for one test. Even more difficult lessons that are not included in the regular tasks of the competition classes could be incorporated. Only two riders per nation were allowed per freestyle and competition class. All freestyle exams were held on September 16th.

Grade Ia

Eight riders competed in the grade Ia freestyle. In the first four places, the result corresponded to that of the championship test of this competition class. Like four years ago, Sophie Christiansen was also the 2016 Paralympic winner in this free-style competition. In Rio de Janeiro she competed with the 9-year-old black mare Athene Lindebjerg .
