At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , medals were awarded in a total of 29 table tennis competitions. The decisions were made on September 11, 12, 13, 16 and 17, 2016 in the Riocentro . Table tennis competitions have been held in Rome since the 1960 Summer Paralympics .
Starting classes
Athletes are divided into starting classes depending on the degree of impairment in order to ensure equal opportunities in competition. There are eleven classes in table tennis. Classes TT 1 to TT 5 start in a wheelchair, classes TT 6 to TT 11 while standing. Low class numbers (except for TT 11) indicate a higher degree of disability than high class numbers.
Game mode
In the individual and team competition, different classes are combined for women and men. There are eleven individual competitions for men and 10 for women. In the team competition, five competitions are played for men and three for women. In team competitions, athletes from several starting classes are combined in one team.
- Individual competition
The individual competitions start with a group phase in which everyone plays against everyone. Then the winners of each group advance and play against each other in a knockout system . Three sets of wins are played per match.
- Team competition
The team competition is played in a knockout system. The teams start in the eighth or quarter-finals depending on the number of participating nations.
To win an encounter, a team must finish three games victoriously. An encounter consists of at least two singles and one double. If no decision has been made after these three games, one or two additional singles will be played until one team has won three games. Three sets of wins are played per game.
