The early years

Bollani grew up in Florence and received piano lessons from the age of 6. At the age of 15 he made his first appearances as a professional pianist. In 1993 he graduated from the Conservatory "Luigi Cherubini" in Florence with Antonio Caggiula. After a short interlude in Italian pop music and participation in the pop-rock band La Forma, he turned to jazz in the mid-1990s.

The 1990s

The meeting with Enrico Rava , with whom he has worked again and again since 1996, was of great importance to him . Together they have given numerous concerts worldwide and recorded more than 15 CDs (including Certi angoli segreti , 1998, Rava Plays Rava and Shades of Chet , 1999). He also began to play regularly with some of the greatest Italian jazz musicians: Paolo Fresu , Roberto Gatto and Enzo Pietropaoli .

In 1998 he published his first album Gnòsi delle fànfole on poems by Fosco Maraini together with the songwriter Massimo Altomare . In the same year he worked with TenderLee for Chet - the first of his numerous collaborations with the American saxophonist Lee Konitz - and won the Best Young Talent” award from the Italian jazz magazine Musica Jazz . In the following year he released two new CDs: Mambo italiano , recorded with the double bass player Ares Tavolazzi , one of his preferred partners, and L'orchestra del Titanic with the formation of the same name, which includes Bollani, Antonello Salis , Riccardo Onori, Raffaello Pareti and Walter Paoli belonged to.
