More than 1000 individual events take place on over 60 stages; numerous performers present themselves to around 400,000 visitors for almost a week. The festival area covers around half the area of the "Óbudai" - or "Hajógyári-sziget", a publicly accessible island with a golf course. The "Obudaer" - or as many Budapesters call them "Shipyard Island", is home to the Sziget Festival and a large number of nightclubs . The island has developed into one of the party centers of Budapest in the last few years, the "Bed Beach", "Dokk-Beach" and "Dokk-Klub" are particularly worthy of mention.

The island is located on the northern edge of the center of Budapest and is the northernmost of the three city islands of Budapest. The festival owes its name to the Hungarian word for island "Sziget". There is a specially set up boat service that leaves from the Margaret Bridge in Pest . For the festival, a small town (Város) will be built on the island with a post office, a bank, money exchange offices and ATMs. There is also a supermarket, pharmacy, lost property office and free storage of valuables.
