Theudebald (Alamanne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theudebald also Theutbald (*?; † 746?) Was an Alemannic duke from 709 to 746. He was the son of Gotfrid and brother of Lantfrid .

After Duke Gotfrid's death in 709, Theudebald and his brother Lantfrid assumed the post of Alemannic Duke. In their office both brothers were bitterly hostile to the Franconian house fights.

Monastery bishop Pirmin founded the Reichenau monastery in 724 under the protection of Hausmeiers Karl Martell in the middle of the Alemannic duchy, which Lantfrid and Theudebald saw as a provocation. Theudebald expelled the abbot Pirmin ob odium Karoli (out of hatred against Karl) in 727 and the successor Abbot Heddo from the Reichenau monastery in 732 .

In 730 Charles Martell led a campaign against the dukes Theudebald and Lantfrid. Lantfrid died that same year and Theudebald then took over the sole office of duke.

742 rose up Theudebald together with the Vaskonen , Bajuwaren and Saxons in Alsace against the caretakers Karlmann and Pippin III. In 743, Theudebald and the Bavarian Duke Odilo suffered a defeat on the Lech against both Hausmeier. Karlmann put down an uprising in Alemannia in 746 and prevailed there as ruler.
