The presentation of the 70th annual Tony Awards ( American Theater Wing's 70th Annual Antoinette Perry "Tony" Awards ) was held on 12 June 2016 and of James Corden moderated. After three years at Radio City Music Hall , the event returned to New York's Beacon Theater . The award recognizes outstanding performance in Broadway productions in the 2015–16 season. CBS broadcast the evening live on US television. The award is presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing .

Moderator Corden dedicated the award to all the victims of the Orlando massacre that had taken place hours earlier.

ceremony

British actor and comedian James Corden (himself a Tony Award winner: One Man, Two Guvnors ; best actor in a play, 2012; has hosted the Late Late Show for CBS since spring 2015 ) hosted the award ceremony for the first time. Before the actual opening, he greeted his guests and addressed a few words to the families and friends of the victims of the devastating massacre that had happened in the early morning hours of the same day at the Pulse Club in Orlando .

"Good evening. All over the world people are trying to come to terms with the dire events in Orlando this morning. On behalf of the entire theater community and everyone in this room, I would like to say: We all share in your fate. All we can tell you is: you are not alone now! Your tragedy is also our tragedy. The theater is a place where every race, every belief, every sexuality and every gender is equal, accepted and loved. Hatred will never win. Together we have to take care of it. Tonight is a symbol and celebration of this principle. This is the Tony Awards! "

The opening monologue, which is characteristic of American shows, is typically replaced by a musical performance in the style of Broadway theater in the award ceremonies. The British singer-songwriter and musical composer Gary Barlow ( Finding Neverland , Take That ) has been won over for this year's opening song . In this performance Corden shared his memories of his first theater contacts as a child and slipped one after the other into various leading roles in well-known musicals, which gave the song a medley character at times.
