history

Northern access structure before renovation, 2011

The project planning of the building was incumbent on the design and surveying company of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , operating part Magdeburg.

The underground station was built as part of the extension of what was then line E to Hönow and has been served regularly since July 1, 1989. The station was initially to be named Kaulsdorf-Nordost , but was then called Heinz-Hoffmann-Straße (abbreviation: Hm ) when it opened . The Heinz-Hoffmann-Straße was after the army general and GDR Defense Minister Heinz Hoffmann named. In this capacity, Hoffmann was subordinate to the border troops of the GDR , he was jointly responsible for the order to shoot at the GDR borders with the Federal Republic and West Berlin .

In 1991, the classified Berlin Senate , the Heinz-Hoffmann-Straße as one of the roads, which for "active opponents of democracy and at the same time intellectual and political pioneers of Stalinist tyranny , the GDR were named -Regimes and other communist regime of injustice" and sought a Inclusion of the street in the already existing Grottkauer Straße further east. In anticipation of this, the station was renamed Grottkauer Straße on October 2, 1991 - Grottkau is the German name for today's Polish city of Grodków . However, the planned renaming failed due to the resistance of the residents of Heinz-Hoffmann-Strasse , who successfully fought against renumbering the houses. That is why Heinz-Hoffmann-Strasse was renamed Neue Grottkauer Strasse in 1992. The station was named after a street that was 500 meters away. As a correction, the station was finally given the appropriate name on September 29, 1996.

The station was renovated in the course of the International Horticultural Exhibition 2017 in the neighboring Gardens of the World until April 11, 2017. a. an elevator, a new roof and new lighting. Part of the plan was the renaming of Neue Grottkauer Straße to Kienberg - Gardens of the World , which took place on December 9, 2016, two days before the timetable change. The costs for all measures were estimated at around 6.6 million euros. Of this, 3.3 million euros were financed by the BENE (Berlin Program for Sustainable Development) funding program, 500,000 euros for the barrier-free expansion were borne by the state of Berlin, the remaining costs were borne by the BVG . The cost of completion was 7.5 million euros.
