The USS Columbus (SSN-762) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to. It was named after the city of Columbus , Ohio .

history

SSN-762 was commissioned in 1986 and early 1991 at Electric Boat in Kiel set. The construction time in the dry dock was one and a half years, on August 1st the boat was christened Columbus and was launched. After the final equipment at the pier and the first test drives, the submarine was officially put into service in June 1993. A year later, the boat was re-docked for so-called post shakedown availability , and the last problems were resolved by September. Then the Columbus moved to Pearl Harbor , Hawaii , where it started its first mission to the West Pacific from the end of 1995.

In 2004, the Columbus finished a mission that had started in October 2003 and docked in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the fall to undergo an overhaul.

In mid-April 2006, the Columbus came into the public eye when seven crew members were charged, among other things, with assault, breach of duty and hazing at the expense of two shipmates. The ranks of the defendants ranged from Petty Officer Third Class to Senior Chief Petty Officer . On June 13th, the commandant of the boat was relieved.

In the summer of 2010, the submarine took part in the multinational exercise RIMPAC.
