The USS Phoenix (SSN-702) was a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and belonged to the Los Angeles-class submarine to. The namesake for them was the city of Phoenix , Arizona .
history
SSN-702 was commissioned in 1973 and laid down at the Electric Boat shipyard in July 1977. After the launch at the end of 1979, the final equipment and shipyard test drives followed, the official commissioning took place at the end of 1981.
After 16 and a half years of service, the nuclear fuel in the boat's nuclear reactor should have been replaced. However, since the Phoenix belonged to the first construction lot of its class and, unlike newer boats, did not have a vertical launching system , the money for the overhaul and annual operating costs were saved and the boat was decommissioned. The boat is currently in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and awaiting dismantling, which will take place in the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 2009 .
