Viktor Knoch (born December 12, 1989 in Pécs ) is a Hungarian short tracker and Olympic champion .

Career

For the first time at a major international event, Knoch started at the Junior World Championships 2005 in Belgrade at the age of fifteen , where he did not, however, make it past the quarter finals in any race. Nevertheless, he was used for the first time in September 2005 in the Short Track World Cup as a B-Junior. After he achieved good placings there several times, especially over the 1500 meters, where he reached the semi-finals three times, at the end of the season he achieved 18th place in the overall World Cup and even twelfth in the 1500 meter World Cup. Since he achieved several decent results at the Junior World Championships and the European Championships in January 2006 , the Hungarian Association nominated him as one of two short trackers alongside Peter Darázs for the Winter Olympics in Turin . Here he achieved fifth place in the 1,500 meter competition after qualifying for the final in second in the semifinals. At the World Championships in Minneapolis he did not make it to the finals, but he set his new personal bests on all distances.

The 2006/07 season ended for Knoch with further top 10 results in the World Cup, but this time also over 1000 meters with two very good fifth places. At the Junior World Championships in Mladá Boleslav he was even fifth overall, over 1500 meters he reached third place. The Hungarian was similarly successful at the 2007 European Championship , where he was again fifth overall and this time second in the 1,500 meter distance. He also won the silver medal with the relay, his first at international events. The 2007/08 season ran for Knoch without any start at major events, and only weaker results were achieved in the World Cup. In the Short Track World Cup 2008/09 Knoch returned, still as A-Junior, with two tenth places. In December 2009 he won the Santa Claus Cup in Budapest over 500 and 1500 meters as well as the overall standings. Shortly before, he had qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver with a 10th place over 500 meters in Marquette . There he started after a fifth place at the European Championships 2010 in Dresden over 500 meters in all three individual disciplines. The best result was a 21st place over the 1000 meters, after being eliminated in the first lap.

In November 2010 Knoch won the 500 and 1000 meters as well as the overall standings at the Anatolian Cup in Erzurum , Turkey . In January 2011 he secured his first three national titles over 500 and 1000 meters as well as the overall standings. A few days later, Knoch started the Winter Univsersiade 2011 , but did not get past 25th place over 1500 meters. On December 30, 2012, Knoch just barely missed his first World Cup podium in fourth over 1000 meters in Nagoya . At the Short Track European Championships in 2013 in Malmö , he was 13th overall. The best individual placement was tenth place over 500 meters. A few weeks later he was eighth over 500 meters at the 2013 World Championships in Debrecen .

In February 2014, he started his third Olympic Winter Games in Sochi . The best individual result there was a 12th place over 500 meters. In October 2014 he won five silver medals at the Hungarian Championships. In the 2014/15 season he came second in the relay twice in the World Cup and won his first individual victory in the 1000 meters in Erzurum . He achieved fifth place in the World Cup over 500 meters. At the 2015 World Championships in Moscow and at the 2015 European Championships in Dordrecht , Knoch won the silver medal in the 5000 meter relay together with Csaba Burján , Sándor Liu Shaolin and Shaoang Liu . In the 2015/16 season he won the season in Shanghai and finished third in Montreal with the season and in Toronto . At the European Championships in 2016 in Sochi, she won the silver medal with the relay. Her best placings at the 2016 World Championships in Seoul were 15th place over 1000 meters and fourth place with the relay. In the following season he triumphed at the World Cup in Calgary and in Gangneung each with the relay. At the European Championships in Turin in 2017 , he was eighth in the all-around competition and fourth in the relay. In March 2017 he won the bronze medal with the relay at the 2017 World Championships in Rotterdam .
