The elections and referendums listed here took place in 2006 or were scheduled for the date shown.
Far from all of the 2006 elections listed here were conducted in accordance with internationally recognized democratic standards. It also includes sham elections in dictatorships without alternative candidates or elections whose results were achieved through massive electoral fraud or without fair, equal access of the competing candidates or parties to the mass media . The map on the right gives a rough impression of the meaningfulness of the listed elections. It shows those countries in blue that are classified as "electoral democracies" by the Freedom House organization . However, Freedom House's assessments are by no means undisputed in all cases.
Due to the large number of elections that are held worldwide each year, the list cannot claim to be exhaustive. In any case, the aim is to list all elections of at least national importance.
