At Point Saint Clair, near where the mile marker was located, the route turns southward and heads towards the northernmost point of the island, Point aux Pins. The route then makes a southeastern turn and passes British Landing State Dock. Nearby is the British Landing Nature Trail. After passing British Landing, M-185 intersects with British Landing Road, where yet another picnic area is located. For a short distance southeast of British Landing, M-185 actually leaves the state park. However, just north of the five mile marker, M-185 re-enters the park and passes a bike trail. The first landmark within Mackinac Island is the seventh (and final) mile marker. The route continues through West Bluff and passes the boundary of the park for the final time. At Julia Point, the route heads northward, intersecting with French Lane, which is designated to not have horses run along it. M-185 is a state trunkline highway in the U.S. state of Michigan that circles Mackinac Island, a popular tourist destination, along the island's shoreline. A narrow paved road of 8.004 miles (12.881 km) in length, it offers scenic views of the Straits of Mackinac that divide the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It also has no connection to any other Michigan state trunkline highways—as it is on an island—and is accessible from elsewhere only by passenger ferry. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, M-185 is "the only state highway in the country that does not allow cars."[3][4] It is called a "motorless highway" as well.[5]

The City of Mackinac Island, which shares jurisdiction over Mackinac Island, calls M-185 "Main Street" within the built-up area on the island's southeast quadrant, and "Lake Shore Road" everywhere else. M-185 passes by several key sites within Mackinac Island State Park, including Fort Mackinac, Arch Rock, British Landing, and Devil's Kitchen. It is one of only three state trunkline routes in Michigan on islands. The others are M-134 on Drummond Island and M-154 on Harsens Island.[6][7]

Route description

As a circular highway, it has no specific termini. The highway's surveyor's mark of beginning, a "Mile 0" wooden marker, is placed in front of the island Visitor Center, originally a U.S. Coast Guard station, operated by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission. It uses wooden markers, not steel markers, to measure miles; these markers are erected by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, as MDOT does not erect the standard M-route signs on this roadway itself.[6][8]

Leaving downtown Mackinac Island

M-185's beginning and end is marked at the intersection of Huron Street and Fort Street. At the zero mile marker, M-185 head northward, passing through Marquette Park, and heads by the Macinac Island State Park Visitor Center. Huron Street continues and turns eastward, passing to the south of the Indian Dormitory. M-185 passes a marina and the Arnold Transit Company - East Dock before making a curve to the southeast. Saint Anne Catholic Church is visible to the north on the highway. Not far afterward, the Mission Church is passed, along with the Mission House. M-185 then heads to the south of Mission Point Resort, located on the highway itself. Shoreline Trail, a trail to the south, begins near the resort and parallels up to the Water Filtration Park, which is located after the state park boundary. At the state park boundary, Huron Street and M-185 switches names to Lake Shore Road.[6]

Outside of the city

Lake Shore Road heads to the north once again, passing Robinson's Folly. The highway then passes a picnic area, where M-185 reaches the one mile marker. Just north of the mile marker, M-185 passes Arch Rock and the intersection with Range Road. Another picnic area is passed, and the isolated highway heads to the northeast along the shores of Lake Huron. After yet another picnic area, M-185 passes Hennepin Point and Voyageur's Bay. A short distance after the picnic area stretch, M-185 passes the two mile marker. At this point, the next mile is a stretch of picnic areas, and the only other location is Carver Pond, which is located right after the second picnic area heading counterclockwise. M-185 intersects with Scott Shores Road, where it passes the three mile marker.[6]

The nearby landmarks along M-185 is Griffin Cove, and the crossing over Brown's Brook. Another park is passed by M-185, and soon after, the highway enters Stonecliffe. In Stonecliffe, M-185 passes Perrot Point, the location of the sixth mile marker. The route leaves Stonecliffe and then heads on a straight track towards downtown Mackinac City. After the sixth mile marker, M-185 passes to the south of Sunset Rock, better known as Chimney Rock. After Jacker Point, the route enters downtown Mackinac Island.[6]

Entering downtown Mackinac Island

The first landmark within Mackinac Island is the seventh (and final) mile marker. The route continues through West Bluff and passes the boundary of the park for the final time. At Julia Point, the route heads northward, intersecting with French Lane, which is designated to not have horses run along it. Behind a few buildings on M-185 are the Star Line and Shepler's Ferry docks. The highway continues on, passing many businesses and the Union Terminal Pier. At the pier, the other side is the location of the City Park. In the city park, there is a Macinac Island Visitor's Bureau center. Just afterwards, M-185 intersects with Fort Street and terminates at the zero mile marker signed at the intersection.[6]

History

The first city ordinances banning all motorized vehicles from the island were passed in 1896, with similar state park rules coming by the 1920s.[9] As such, other than a handful of emergency and utility vehicles as well as others by special, limited-time permit, no cars or trucks are allowed on the island and no motorized vehicles appear on M-185. Traffic on this highway is by foot, on horse or by horse-drawn vehicle, or bicycle.[5]The M-185 designation was first assigned to Lakeshore Drive around Mackinac Island before 1936.[2]

One of the only known motor vehicle collisions on Mackinac Island occurred on M-185 at the head of the Shepler passenger ferry dock, when the island's fire truck slightly damaged the island's ambulance on May 13, 2005. Both vehicles were responding to a report from the ferryboat that an injured passenger required medical attention.[10]

Major intersections

Since M-185 is located on an island, no other state highways intersect with it. Milemarkers are posted in a counterclockwise fashion.[6]
