The West Pier Trust have said that construction work will commence in summer 2008 and a heritage centre will also be built on the seafront close to the site of the pier which was last open for business in 1975. The Argus revealed on July 29, 2008 that building work will definitely not begin until Autumn 2008, 15 months later than originally planned. There is some speculation that the name of the tower will have to be changed, as "Brighton Eye" and "i360" are already in use for other projects. The names "Brighton Tower" or "Euro Tower" are being considered.

2008, there is some concern amomgst Brighton residents as to whether the tower will really be built. The removal of the project from the homepage of the architects has fuelled this speculation.fact

Template:Future building The i360 (also referred to as the "Brighton Eye") is a 183-metre (600 ft)[1] observation tower planned for construction on the seafront of Brighton, part of the city of Brighton and Hove, United Kingdom. Plans were submitted in June 2006 and were approved by Brighton and Hove City Council on 11 October 2006 with construction projected to start in 2007. This date does however seem incorrect, particularly as it is now 2008 and no work has begun. Completion is scheduled for 2009.

Design and construction

The tower was designed by architects Marks Barfield, who also designed the London Eye. Work is due to commence at the end of July on this site for the groundbreaking Brighton Eye. To be built at the shore end of the wrecked West pier, the i360 will have a 183 m (600 ft) high needle tower, with an ascending and descending circular viewing platform with a capacity for 125 people. It will be Britain's highest observation tower with breathtaking views along the coast, across the South Downs and across the Channel.

Architects Marks Barfield said it remained committed to the i360 and that it was "still on track". A spokeswoman said: "We remain very optimistic it will be open by Spring 2010."

There is some speculation that the name of the tower will have to be changed, as "Brighton Eye" and "i360" are already in use for other projects. The names "Brighton Tower" or "Euro Tower" are being considered.[citation needed]

As of October 2008, there is some concern amomgst Brighton residents as to whether the tower will really be built. The removal of the project from the homepage of the architects has fuelled this speculation.[citation needed]
