Enjoy

Have a nice break. IvoShandor 06:44, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed some some of the specifics of hockey in the 1956 Olympics because it seems that he did not play in any match. The official report at http://www.aafla.org/6oic/OfficialReports/1956/OR1956.pdf has the lineups for all the matches and he doesn't appear in any of them (it is a 33 MB file). He also doesn't appear in the list of 14 given in David Wallechinsky's Complete Book of the Summer Olmpics (I checked the 1996 edition). Tintin 13:01, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cricket in Australia

Hi. Cricket in Australia is the new Australian collaboration. Please help to improve it in any way you can. --Scott Davis Talk 13:46, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd appreciate any hints, oh cricket supremo moondyne - all ive done so far is the see also list and some real book refs (gee the cricket project looks book challenged) and oz tagged a lot of oz categories that dont have themSatuSuro 05:03, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Moondyne. The pictures at his cricinfo profile [1] were taken pre 1955 in AUstralia so they should be PD, but cricinfo has tagged themselves as owning it. Is it possible that they have purchsed the rights to it? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:10, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It wouldn't matter providing they are pre 55 as the changes to copyright laws weren't retrospective. but cricinfo can charge for for providing higher quality/resolution, Gnangarra 03:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You will need to show the source and the specific PD licensing according to Australian legislation, I'll dig it up if you want Gnangarra 03:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, once something is in the public domain, we all own the rights to it. I don't recall cricinfo paying me any money to give up my non-exclusive right to use the image.
Seriously, there is a serious and ongoing problem with libraries, archives, etc, placing false copyright tags on images. I approached the State Library of Western Australia about this a couple of years ago, and they agreed that their copyright tags were generally false, but declined to change their practices. Your best bet is to treat every such claim with utter scorn.
Hesperian 03:23, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What they said! —Moondyne 04:57, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sro and battye specifically behave like most institutions on this - denial in the hope that they can raise some revenue via an unchallenged process - it needs a court case (probably to federal level) for them to consider changes - and whats the bet the state govt would pass legislation to sustain their rights - as if we are really in a boom - staffing levels, government interest in growth or development - and expertise in these institutions show the reverse...SatuSuro 05:07, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This cuts to the heart of copyright. I don't think the state government would have the jurisdiction. Besides, if we tried to force them to stop telling copyright porky-pies, they might react by taking down all their online images, which would be a lose-lose. Hesperian 05:17, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I reckon that the revenue they raise from sale of images would be minuscule. I think it's just laziness to fix their software with a tinge of arrogance and ignorance thrown in. —Moondyne 05:13, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fortunately once its becomes PD it cant be withdrawn, shhh conspiritiously checks the room <whisper> I seam to recall the Bradman museum has been successful to some extent in retaining copyrights.</whisper>. its even worse with the battye as that collection is from freely given images in the first place. Gnangarra 05:16, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I knew about Bradman's name having some copyright protection, but images is a new one on me. Are you sure? —Moondyne 05:25, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean trademark protection? Hesperian 05:27, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
vaguely Remember reading on here(will dig) about this early on, something to do with a news image from the late 40's being used. Was also some off wiki commentary around the same time(not associated with here), thats what really dragged me into the murky underworld of image copyrights. Any how I'll do some digging under the cover of darkness tonight. One a different thought what are doing here anyway moondyne, thought you were sitting under a shady tree on the road to toodyay wait for a horse Gnangarra 05:35, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If I had my druthers I'd be in cave near Margaret R. —Moondyne 05:54, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, well I guess I can upload that picture of his bowling action for DYK then. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:27, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
yep, Gnangarra

RfA thanks

Wandoo

Re: "this farce ends now", its about time; welcome back. :-)

There's nothing inherently wrong with multiple plant species having the same common name, e.g. Swamp Banksia. But in this case, I can find no evidence that E. zopherophloia is commonly named "Powder-barked Wandoo". The Australian plant common name database gives its common name as "Blackbutt Mallee". I suspect a copypaste error. I've made a correction.

List of Wandoos: E. accedens (Powder bark Wandoo), E. capillosa (Wheatbelt Wandoo), E. lanepoolei (Salmonbark Wandoo), E. livida (Mallee Wandoo), E. nigrifunda (Desert Wandoo), E. redunca (Wandoo), E. wandoo (Wandoo).

Navarine

Sometimes has long breaks - I'd say go ahead and do it - as I am sure if its explained he would accept - seems a reasonable Hobartian from my experience so far... SatuSuro 12:58, 6 April 2007 (UTC) Thanks for that - that message above about the wandoos has me thinking I have seen a list at variance from that, cannot remember where though...SatuSuro 14:50, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

de Bernales

Good article! I did have a question on a trivial matter. I'm wondering if there is a connection between his first and second wife, Bessie Picken Berry and Helen Florence Berry? Regards, Fred 05:17, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
