History

The team formerly known as Maccabi Akko played several years in the lower leagues and was in the shadow of the more successful side of Hapoel Akko.

In the late 80s Maccabi Akko began to move up the ranks to then second best league, Liga Artzit, bypassing Hapoel Akko and consequently being the major club of Akko.

In the year 2000, chairman Bruch Ofir decided to move the team from Akko to Kiryat Ata and the team was renamed from Maccabi Akko to Maccabi Irony Kiryat Ata, as a resuly of continuous disrespect from the municipality towards his team. For the people of Kiryat Ata it was a new chance of getting a new football team in their town, after a few years back saw Hapoel Kiryat Ata fall apart. In the first year of it existance Maccabi played in Liga Leumit, though the team failed to survive and got relegated to the Liga Artzit.

In the year 2005, Kiryat Ata got relegated after finishing one place before last, but due to a merge between two clubs, Maccabi was to stay in the league where it playes until this very day.
