The Mosque of Omar is located directly opposite the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and is only open for worship.
The mosque is located at the north end of the Muristan, the former home of the Knights Hospitaller. It was built in 1216 by Saladin's son to commemorate Caliph Omar's visit to Jerusalem in 638, when Omar prayed on the steps of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre instead of inside so that it could remain a Christian holy place.
