Umar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Umar [ ˈʕumar ] or Omar ( Arabic عمر ʿUmar , also ʿOmar , Turkish : Ömer , Albanian : Ymer ) is a male given name of Arabic origin. The spelling Umar is based on the high Arabic phonetics, while Omar goes back to the dialectal pronunciation of the name, which was alsoformativewhen the name was adopted in the Iranian languages (hence Persian : Omar). Standard Arabic short u is usually flattened to short o in dialectal Arabic and Persian. Umar or Omar can be part of a family name (see below).

It owes its popularity to Umar ibn al-Chattab , the second of the four “rightly guided” caliphs of Islam.
