Omar Bakri Mohammed , usually just referred to as Omar Bakri , (* 1958 in Aleppo , Syria ) is a Sunni Islamist fundamentalist and agitator.

Bakri, who originally came from Syria, joined the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood early on, who in 1982 dared an uprising against the Shiite - Alawite- dominated Ba'ath government , which was brutally suppressed. He had to leave the country and, after several stops, finally settled in London in the 1980s, where he and like-minded people created an Islamist center in the Finsbury district . For many years Bakri was the leading hate preacher in England , alongside Abu Hamza al-Masri and Abu Qatada . So he founded the al-Muhajiroun group to spread his views. He made no secret of his views and described the assassins of September 11th as magnificent 19 ("the glorious 19"). After the London attacks , he said to the Reuters agency : "I would like to see the Islamic flag fly, not only over number 10 Downing Street , but over the whole world" ( "I would like the Islamic flag not just over 10 Downing Street ." [Seat of the British Prime Minister] but over the whole world ").

In August 2005, he was no longer allowed to enter the country after traveling abroad. He settled in Lebanon , where he was arrested in November 2010 on suspicion of terrorism.
