Abu Qatada ( Arabic أبو قتادة الفلسطيني, DMG Abū Qatāda al-Filasṭīnī , real name Omar Mohammed Othman ; * 1959/1960 in Bethlehem , then Jordan , today West Bank ) is an Islamist fundamentalist of Palestinian origin with Jordanian citizenship.

Life

Qatada lived as a political refugee in the UK from 1993 to 2013 after being sentenced to death for absentee murder in his home country of Jordan in connection with a series of bombings in 1998. He is considered one of the most influential jihadists in Europe. He is close friends with Abu Hamza al-Masri and Omar Bakri Mohammed .

The Spanish examining magistrate Baltasar Garzón calls Abu Qatada the spiritual head of the mujahideen and bin Laden's ambassador in Europe. Recordings of his sermons were found in Mohammed Atta's apartment . He had to deliver his sermons at the Four Feathers Club near Baker Street in London because he is not wanted in most mosques.

Escape and imprisonment

In 2002 he went into hiding. However, he was arrested in a meetinghouse in south London in October 2002 and taken to Belmarsh Prison . Although he was temporarily released on bail in March 2005, he was arrested again in August with the aim of extradition to Jordan. Abu Dahdah , one of the prime suspects in the Madrid attacks , had visited Qatada over 25 times with money and like-minded people. He continues to have a large Islamist following. In June 2007, the attempt by Islamists of the terrorist organization Army of Islam to exchange Qatada for the journalist Alan Johnston kidnapped in the Gaza Strip failed . In February 2009, the UK Supreme Court approved the expulsion of Abu Qatada to Jordan. The European Court of Human Rights ruled in January 2012 that the extradition of Abu Qatada would violate the European Convention on Human Rights, as there was a threat of indictment in Jordan based on statements that were most likely obtained through torture .

Release and deportation

On February 13, 2012, Abu Qatada was released under strict security conditions. The conditions include, among other things, that he must hand in his passport, wear an electronic bracelet, with the exception of his wife and children, not be allowed to meet anyone without prior notification, only have a bank account, not use a telephone, computer or other data carrier and may not receive visitors with computers.

On July 7, 2013, Abu Qatada was finally deported to Jordan. The deportation was previously made possible by an agreement between the United Kingdom and Jordan that stipulated that evidence obtained under torture should not be used in legal proceedings. On September 24, 2014, a Jordanian military court acquitted him of the allegation that he had planned attacks against US citizens and Israelis. Despite the agreement with the United Kingdom, a confession, possibly obtained under torture, of an alleged accomplice was used in the trial.

Demarcation

The German Salafist Christian Emde , an activist of the terrorist organization Islamic State , also used Abu Qatada as a battle name.
