Jaish al-Islam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jaish al-Islam ( Arabic جَيش الإسلام, DMG Ǧaiš al-Islām  , Army of Islam ') is a militant, Salafist , Palestinian organization, about whose goals and motives very little is known.

background

The group pursues the goals of holy war, jihad . She is associated with the Palestinian family clan Dughmusch; Its head, however, states that the members of his clan are also members of al-Fatah , Hamas and the People's Resistance Committee . According to the clan leader Mumtaz Dughmusch, the group also consists of fighters who do not belong to his clan. In September 2015 it became known that Jaish al-Islam had joined the Islamic State , which received a corresponding declaration of loyalty from the group. No connections are known to the Syrian rebel group of the same name .

Actions

In June 2006, activists from this group were involved in the kidnapping of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit , which Israel took on the occasion of the attacks on Gaza known as Operation Summer Rain . Militants from the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades and Islamic Jihad are believed to have been involved in the action, in which two other soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces were killed . The Army of Islam group was previously completely unknown. Abu Muthana has performed publicly for this group.

The group is also behind the abduction and hostage of BBC reporter Alan Johnston in April 2007. Reports from Israel on March 21 that the group was responsible for the reporter's disappearance were denied by the group, but the group transmitted on May 9, 2007 a videotape to Al Jazeera showing Johnston and also called for the release of Muslim prisoners in the UK, in particular Abu Qatada , who is being extradited and is threatened with deportation to Syria .

After taking power in the Gaza Strip, Hamas demanded the release of Alan Johnston and issued an ultimatum. Hamas also accused the group of sympathizing with Mohammed Dahlan , the leader of al-Fatah in the Gaza Strip; but this was rejected by the chief of the Dughmusch clan. On July 4, 2007, Johnston was finally released by his kidnappers and turned over to Hamas.

The Egyptian Ministry of the Interior said the group was responsible for the terrorist attack on January 1, 2011 in Alexandria , but a spokesman for the organization has denied this.
