Alan Johnston
Alan Graham Johnston (born May 17, 1962 in Lindi , Tanganyika , Tanzania ) is a British journalist with the BBC .
Life
Alan Johnston was born in Tanzania to Scottish parents. He attended the Dollar Academy in Dollar and studied at Dundee University in Dundee . In 1991 he started working for the BBC. He was a correspondent in Tashkent and Kabul before going to the Gaza Strip , where he worked from April 2004 until his kidnapping. During this period, Alan Johnston was the only permanent Western journalist living in the Gaza Strip. He was abducted on March 12, 2007 in Gaza City and released on July 4, 2007.

On March 12, 2007, Alan Johnston was abducted by the Army of Islam . The kidnappers released a hostage video of the BBC reporter with an explosive belt around his body on June 1, 2007. They then demanded the release of Muslim prisoners in Great Britain. Alan Johnston was released on July 4, 2007 after being held hostage for 114 days. He was driven to the home of the Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya in the region .
Awards
On the day of his release, Alan Johnston was awarded the UK Section of Amnesty International's Media Prize.
In 2008 Johnston received the Leipzig Media Foundation's Prize for the Freedom and Future of the Media .
