The Baker Street is a street in the London district of Marylebone of the district City of Westminster (NW1).

Baker Street became famous through the fictional character Sherlock Holmes , created in 1886/1887 by the author Arthur Conan Doyle . Sherlock Holmes lives in the stories at the then fictional address 221b Baker Street , at the time of Arthur Conan Doyle the street was only numbered up to number 100. The underground station Baker Street is today decorated in many ways with motifs of Sherlock Holmes. There service also in the vernacular since its opening in 1906 with the portmanteau Bakerloo gave line.

During the Second World War , the secret Special Operations Executive (SOE), also known as The Baker Street Irregulars in reference to Sherlock Holmes , had its headquarters at 64 Baker Street.

Many tourists visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221b Baker Street and the nearby Madame Tussauds wax museum .

In 1978 Gerry Rafferty sang the street in the rock song of the same name , which is characterized by the saxophone solo played by Raphael Ravenscroft .

On September 11, 1971, a bank robbery took place in a branch of Lloyds Bank on Baker Street.
