Abu Hamza al-Masri (أبو حمزة المصري; * as Mustafa Kamel April 15, 1958 in Alexandria , Egypt ) is a fundamentalist Islamic hate preacher and one of the best known Islamists in Great Britain .

Life

He is the son of an Egyptian officer. He studied engineering at the University of Brighton . At the time of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, he said he was involved in a mining project near Jalalabad . In the process he lost both hands and one eye. Because of this, he is a prosthesis wearer on his right arm in the shape of a distinctive arm hook.

His Finsbury Park Mosque is associated with Zacarias Moussaoui and Richard Reid ; he is considered close friends with Omar Bakri Mohammed and Abu Qatada . Finsbury is often called " Londonistan " and is considered a center of Islamists and jihadists. His speeches often begin with the words: "Eliminate the Jews from the face of the earth, slaughter the unbelievers, establish the worldwide caliphate ." After three years of marriage with Valerie nee. Traverso, who converted from Catholic to Islam, acquired British citizenship in 1983 . The marriage was divorced and annulled in 1984 because Valerie was not divorced from her ex-husband until 1982. A son named Mohammed Kamel Mostafa comes from his marriage. From his second marriage to Nadjet, which he married in 1984, there are seven children. In 2006, Abu Hamza al-Masri was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment in Great Britain for sedition .

His case hit the headlines again in the UK in October 2006 after it was discovered that Abu Hamza was able to buy a house in West London despite his accounts being blocked from prison.

In April 2012 the European Court of Human Rights approved the extradition of Abu Hamza to the United States . Hamza moved the case to be referred to the Grand Chamber of the Tribunal; on September 24, 2012, the Court denied that request. The British Home Secretary Theresa May announced on the same day that Hamza would be extradited "as soon as possible". On the night of October 5th to 6th, 2012, shortly after a court ruling by the High Court (London), Abu Hamza was flown to the USA with four other terror suspects.

There are a total of eleven charges against Hamza in the United States. Hamza is charged with participating in a 1998 hostage situation in Yemen . He is also charged with setting up a terror camp in the US state of Oregon (1999 and 2000) and supporting terrorist attacks in Afghanistan (1999 to 2001). The trial began on April 14, 2014. On May 19, 2014, a jury in a New York District Court found him guilty on all 11 counts. He was therefore sentenced to life imprisonment, which he is supposed to serve in a maximum security prison.

family

Hamza al-Masri has eight children. Al-Masri's son Sufiyan Mustafa (1995) withdrew his British passport from the Home Office after joining an Islamist group in the Syrian Civil War in 2013 . In 2014, speculation about large welfare payments and the state-paid rent for a house in Shepherd's Bush housing his unemployed second wife and some of his unemployed children caused a stir after it was revealed that al-Masri was out of jail at the time bought out a £ 220,000 property in London.
