Emde converted to Sunni Islam in 2003 at the age of 19 . He visited the now closed mosque of the Millatu Ibrahim organization in his hometown of Solingen. In 2011 he was arrested while in the UK for possession of bomb- making instructions and sentenced to 16 months in prison. In December 2014, Emde granted former member of the Bundestag Jürgen Todenhöfer an interview in Mosul , which was broadcast by RTL the following year. In 2016, documents emerged that indicated that Emde was also acting as a recruiter or surety for terrorists entering Syria and Iraq .

In February 2017, Emde is said to have tried to cheat his mother out of 20,000 euros in favor of the Islamic State . The German federal prosecutor's office investigated him for membership in a terrorist organization . According to several other IS terrorists, he was killed in a drone attack in Syria in late 2018.
