H&R Block is a US tax consultancy . The company was founded in 1955 by the brothers Henry and Richard Bloch and, in addition to its work in tax consulting, also offers software for the preparation of tax returns and consulting services outside of traditional tax consulting. H&R Block is active in North America, Australia and India and is part of the S&P 500 index. The business model is partly based on a franchise system in which independent branches operate under the name H&R Block without belonging directly to the group. H&R Block offices exist in all 50 US states, in Puerto Rico , in other suburbs of the United States and some US military bases worldwide. In fiscal 2018, the company had 2,700 permanent full-time employees, but employed up to 90,700 seasonal workers.
In 1980, H&R Block took over the Internet service provider Compuserve and sold it on in 1997.
