Commerce is a city in Hunt County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the northeast of the county and northeast Texas, is about 50 km to the north from Oklahoma and has a total area of 16.9 km 2 , of which 0.1 km 2 is water.
history
The beginning of the settlement, then called Cow Hill because of the large herds of cattle between the Middle Sulfur River and the South Sulfur River , is traced back to JH "Si" Jackson , who set up a shop or trading post here in 1864. In 1870 there were a few more houses and a post office and in 1872 the first public school was established.
In 1885 the town, now with 145 inhabitants, was granted city rights. In 1887 the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad gave the city direct connections to Texarkana , Sherman and Fort Worth .

According to the 2000 census, 7,669 people lived here in 2,881 households and 1,524 families. The population density was 456.9 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 71.07% White, 20.78% African American, 0.42% Native American, 2.59% Asian, 0.21% Pacific Islander residents and 3.13% non-residents ethnic groups. About 1.80% were mixed race and 7.65% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,881 households, 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 35.0% of these were married couples living together. 14.0% were single mothers and 47.1% were non-families. 36.1% of all households were single households and 10.1% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 3.02.
21.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 28.2% 18 to 24, 26.3% 25 to 44, 14.3% 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females of all age groups there were 95.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 94.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 24,065 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,284. Males had a median income of $ 26,389 versus $ 19,565 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,444. 22.9% of the population and 13.8% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 24.4% were children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.8% were 65 or older.
